The anthology horror film The ABCs of Death still rarely gets the love it deserves from the community, despite 12 years in the world. With entries from horror admins from all over the world, it’s to sum it up, and yet. . . In terms of the spirit of the thing: the opening credits deal with this as a pleasure.
By presenting a space filled with blood, flowing from open pipes and seeping upward from the floor, we are transported through the overflow, first down and then upward, witnessing the smaller main points of blood seeping into the space. Quick cuts send us between shots, instant zooms bring us closer, time speeds up and slows down at abnormal intervals, and all the while, film flickers and degraded quality infects images.
The series is like a roller coaster ride in hell, and since it’s tasked with creating some 26 horror shorts, it does an excellent job, building itself off the established visual and auditory vernacular of horror, referencing a number of established properties, Stanley added. The fact that blood covers and charges a collection of children’s building blocks (which finish spelling out the title) is the terrible icing on the cake.
