The Cardinals will resume their season with a white Sox double in Chicago on Saturday, MLB announced Friday.
St. Louis returns to the area after a two-week recess for the club’s coronavirus outbreak. Baseball Operations President John Mozeliak showed reporters Thursday that an 18th member of the team, an anonymous staff member, had tested positive. The staff member is asymptomatic and has not been in contact with players isolated since last week, allowing cardinals to obtain permission to resume their schedule.
After betting on the White Sox in Sunday’s series final, the Cardinals will go to the North Side to face the Cubs 4 times in two days: a double Monday and a double Wednesday. A third double program will take place on September 5 in Chicago. Each seven-inning doubles game will come with games originally scheduled for Wrigley Field, as well as a catch-up game for the series between the Cardinals and cubs originally scheduled for August 7 to August. nine at Busch Stadium.
From St. Louis to Chicago, cardinals have rented 41 cars, and anyone who is quarantined next week will drive into town. Members who have not been in contact with the virus will take the team bus.
Fans will see new faces in the weekend series after the Cardinals announced that they would announce five players from their educational site of choice to face the White Sox, adding to the more sensible prospect Dylan Carlson. First baseman John Nogowski and pitchers Seth Elledge and Rob Kaminsky will also make their MLB debut, while the Cardinals plan to remove left-hander Ricardo Sanchez from their 40-man roster.
The Cardinals played the Twins for the last time at Target Field on July 29 before the epidemic temporarily destroyed the club. After delivering their first two positive tests on July 31, the Cardinals stayed at their Milwaukee hotel for several days. Once the club was allowed to leave Milwaukee on August 5, they were forced to return to St. Louis in quarantine two days later. The number of positive instances of the team nevertheless amounts to 18, totaling 10 players.
With five games remaining on the MLB 60-game calendar, considerations have increased on how St. Louis would infiltrate all of its matchups, even doubles.
Despite the concerns, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said this week that he thought he might end the season to some extent.
“I think you’re reaching 60 or not, it’s complicated right now,” Manfred said. “I think they’re going to play. I think it’s imaginable that they play enough games to be credible, to be a credible competitor this season.”
Here is the updated calendar of the cardinals:
