6 New Movies and Shows from Netflix, Amazon, Disney Plus, HBO Max and Apple TV Plus to Stream This Weekend

Another week ending means another batch of streaming recommendations from us. And there’s no shortage of possible options this weekend for watching stuff, whether you want a movie to stream or a new series to dive into.

A new season of The Crown is now on Netflix, with all 10 episodes available for streaming. The fifth season takes us back to the 90s, when the Queen and her circle of family went through difficult times, and there is a new logo cast. Directed through Imelda Staunton to boot. On Prime Video, you can start watching the Western-era drama The English, starring Emily Blunt, or the black comedy Mammals starring James Corden; the former can be viewed on BBC iPlayer if you are in the UK. Meanwhile, Mythic Quest season 3 is coming to Apple TV Plus.

As for the movies, Sundance’s hit documentary Fire of Love is now on Disney Plus, while Olivia Wilde’s mental mystery Don’t Worry Darling can now stream on HBO Max.

The Crown is back with a new era for the royal circle of relatives and a new cast as well. The fifth season covers the events of the 90s and sees Imelda Staunton succeed Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Jonathan Pryce takes over as Prince Philip, with Dominic West as Prince Charles, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Jonny Lee Miller as Prime Minister John Major and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret. The new episodes will cover Charles and Diana’s divorce, a fireplace at Windsor Castle, and Diana’s arguable interview with Panorama.

The new western series The English stars Emily Blunt as Lady Cornelia Locke, an English woman who arrives in the United States in the late nineteenth century seeking revenge and the man she believes is guilty of her son’s death. On their journey, he meets Eli Whipp, played through Chaske Spencer, a scout cavalry modeler and member of the Pawnee Nation, and the pair form an unlikely bond.

Amazon Mammals’ new black comedy follows two married couples who suffer breakups in their relationship. There’s Michelin-starred chef Jamie (James Corden), whose pregnant wife Amandine (Melia Kreiling) hides secrets from him, and Jamie’s sister Lue (Sally Hawkins), whose marriage to Jeff (Colin Morgan) also begins to show cracks. The series created and written by award-winning playwright Jez Butterworth.

Mythic Quest returns for a third season. The sitcom follows a fictional video game studio that produces a popular online multiplayer role-playing game called Mythic Quest, and struggles to stay in place in front of dysfunctional staff. At the end of season 2, art managers Ian (Rob McElhenney) and Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) left their original to continue their own adventure with the new GrimPop Studios. Season 3 will deal with the consequences of this decision.

The documentary Fire of Love follows the duo of French volcanologists and husband and wife Katia and Maurice Krafft. Narrated through editor and filmmaker Miranda July, archival interviews with the couple are interspersed with their own photographs and images of their round-the-world expeditions documenting active volcanoes. The touching film tells the story of their lives from their reunion to their tragic deaths in the 1991 eruption of Mount Unzen in Japan.

Olivia Wilde’s 2019 booksmart director’s sequel is now on HBO Max. The film sees Jack (Harry Styles) and Alice (Florence Pugh) probably living in marital happiness in the suburbs of the 50s. Jack works for a mysterious company called the Victory Project, which claims to replace the world. However, Alice begins to realize that things are not what they seem. Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll and Wilde herself also star in the thriller.
