”A League of their Own” restart is ordered on Amazon

Fight.

Jacobson, Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Kelly McCormack, Roberta Colindrez and Priscilla Delgado star in the series, which features recurring guest stars Molly Ephraim, Kate Berlant and Melanie Field. Jamie Babbit directed the pilot. Sources say some surviving AAGPBL members have served as pilot experts and are expected to continue the series.

“There’s no crying in baseball or Prime Video,” said Vernon Sanders, Amazon’s co-director of television. “Will and Abbi have taken an old film, reinventing it for a new generation with new characters and their own new, fashionable vision in an eternal story of great dreams, friendship, love and, of course, baseball. We are thrilled to Sony’s spouse to bring this exciting new series to our Prime Video consumers worldwide.”

First developed in March 2018, the series is produced through Sony Pictures Television, whose Columbia Pictures produced the film about the real AAGPBL that was formed when World War II threatened to close Major League Baseball. The film followed two sisters, Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty), who were recruited to join the AAGPBL and ended up betting on the Rockford Peaches (against an industry that would see them compete in the World Series). Tom Hanks played manager Jimmy Dugan, an animated character through former major leaguers Jimmie Foxx and Hack Wilson. The cast also included Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, Megan Cavanagh and David Strathairn, who played Ira Lowenstein, the general manager of the league that held him back after owner Walter Harvey (Garry Marshall) sought to close it after the war.

Sources claim that Graham and Jacobson contacted Penny Marshall (before her death in December 2018) and Davis in advance to get their blessing to the Amazon, which, like the film, will explore topics such as prejudice and equality, among others. (The original film included a brief but time when a black woman throws a bullet at Dottie in a scene that briefly illustrates the segregation that existed at the time.)

Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel wrote the original screenplay for the feature film based on a short story by Kelly Candaele and Kim Wilson. Penny Marshall directed the film. The feature film, produced on a budget of $40 million, reached $132 million gross worldwide. In 2012, the Library of Congress decided to keep the film on the U.S. National Film Registry. For its funny and feminist description of the possible options of women and the solidarity of World War II.

With the order, Graham now serves as a showrunner in two Amazon series with League joining Daisy Jones and The Six. Both are derived from their old global agreement with Amazon that began with Mozart in the jungle.

This is the moment when A League of their Own is restarted for the small screen. CBS tried unsuccessfully in 1993 with a sitcom starring Cavanagh and Tracy Reiner, who played Betty “Spaghetti”, reprising their roles. Ganz and Mandel created the series, under Marshall’s direction. Sam McMurray took on the role of Hanks. The series retired after 3 episodes. (A total of six episodes were produced, 3 of which aired in April 1993 and two more in August of the same year).
