How many videos did you watch last year? Either way, it’s not as much as Zach Swope, the new Guinness World Record holder for “Most Videos Seen in Theaters in a Year. “
According to Guinness World Records, Swope watched 777 films between July 2022 and July 2023, eclipsing French director Vincent Krohn’s previous record of 715 films.
Swope, who raises awareness about autism, has even filmed several videos on several occasions, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 35 times and Thor: Love and Thunder 33 times.
This astonishing feat came with a few caveats that Swope had to overcome: the film had to be watched in its entirety (presumably, with no bathroom breaks or quick naps) and all had to be watched “independently of any other activity. “There’s no catastrophic scrolling or checking lists of full-length movies on your phone, thank you very much.
Surprisingly, Swope also has a full-time job and still has time for several screenings a week. He first presented his mammoth feat with Minions: The Rise of Gru, before completing it with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
“Who knows, maybe I’ll come back and try to beat my own record?” said Swope, while revealing that the favorite movie he watched during the 12 months was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Swope will be pleased to hear that a new Mario movie is in the works, aimed at “expanding” the world of Mario, and that it will be released in 2026. After all, 36 times is lovely.
