In February, Samsung released the highly anticipated Galaxy Z Flip. On August 7, the electronic conglomerate followed the official 5G launch of the modern and additional cell phone. Between releases, Samsung recruited Broadway star Condola Rashad as the brand’s new ambassador and put the phone up and running.
After finding a way to travel across the country to Seattle during the coronavirus pandemic, Z Flip is how The Tony-nominated actress stayed lively and hooked with her loved ones. Whether you support it as a mini computer so you can cook and chat with friends or use it as an instant tripod during your nature walks in Emerald City’s great parks, the Tony-nominated actress has tried and tested the Z Flip in every way. To better perceive Rashad’s experience, the actress summed it all up for Forbes in an interview below. He also spoke enthusiastically about his return to music last month with the release of his first visual EP, Space Daughter. Rashad explained that the assignment began early last year and revealed how grateful she was to be able to return to her beginnings as a musician. Many might know her on Broadway, but it has been the music that boosted her career. Beforehand, you’ll notice the impressive procedure behind your art and how this Samsung collaboration couldn’t have come at a greater time.
Isis Briones: How accurately did you bring this back to music?
Condola Rashad: “I know that’s where other people know me, but there’s never been a Broadway transition to music. I started as a musician, what’s exciting is a wonder I can share. When I was a kid until high school, I was a classical pianist. Music has been my first form of expression as an artist. Even as an actor, each and every role I played was through music. As for Space Daughter, I was in a band called Condola and the Stoop Kids. It’s been very clear, around the same time I was doing Romeo and Juliet, that I was going to concentrate on a component of my career. I made the decision to focus on my acting career and then I was making plans to make a big retry as a musician, but no one knew.
About two years later, I was lucky enough to go back to the studio and the so-called Space Daughter came to me. I wrote it, but I didn’t know what it was. I didn’t know if it was the record, a song or my artist’s call. After creating the song, all of a sudden, I knew exactly what I was looking to show visually. I sat down during the first months of 2019 and designed the videos from A to Z. I made all those vision graphics of what I meant. In the most sensible of each video, you have a representation of the central energy, then it becomes another edition of yourself.
IB: Did artists motivate you along the way?
CR: “There are many amazing artists who have created visual pieces. This specific one was encouraged through what came to mind. Of course, Lemonade and many others have encouraged me at times, but those come combined more like a movie. One way or another, I knew I was looking to create a work that lived in chapters. I looked for other people to see her in a series. It wasn’t a scenario where I expected it to be like this and I wrote out.
IB: Have you worked on more music at 40?
CR: “At the beginning of the pandemic, yes. Fortunately, just before I went into quarantine, despite everything, I had to invest in this house study that I intended to do anyway. It was the best time because all of a sudden I got stuck in the house. I have my guitar, my ukulele and my keyboard. I have this new tool that I just bought and it’s really great to have all these gadgets now. But to be honest, I also took the time and area to enjoy the slowdown. I think that was the initial reaction to quarantine, a lot of people, especially creative ones, had this preference to create, make and create. Not bad, but I said, “What if I balance everything, slow down and just breathe?” It’s general just to breathe. I pass and I am. Now I realize it’s more than general to find a balance. That’s where I went.
IB: Apart from work, what did you do instead?
CR: “I cook at home, especially now. It’s a genuine ritual for me and being able to have a folding telephone makes everything a lot easier, and even staying connected with friends. I can do the things I have to do at home while I use the phone in a way I couldn’t before. It’s very easy to use, which makes it really transparent to move smoothly in your day, but also connected to people, music or anything else you need to be connected up.
Also, the camera is unlike any other camera. It’s probably amazing. Part of what I did was spend a lot of time in nature and so many photos and videos that I can get are due to the fact that I was able to fold the phone and place it safely. If I couldn’t do that, I wouldn’t have captured the picture. A vital thing for me was a breath in my body and a breath in nature and examining the bond between the two, so being able to document this was helpful and expansive. That’s the word I think about when I think about the phone, dear. “
IB: Can you share with us some of your favorite hits in Seattle?
CR: “Volunteer Park is actually magical, incredibly magical. I love Seattle. I was here 10 years ago and I played my first play, Ruined. We did it here at the Intiman Theatre and that was exactly 10 years ago. One of the things I love about Seattle is that, even if you’re in a city, the way nature intertwines is unlike anywhere else. You’re in town, but you feel a little like you’re in the woods. It is as if the barriers between a fashionable village and nature are very, very fine. All this coexists in such a magical way. Besides, the pier. Being under any form of water right now is very relaxing.
IB: Once it’s all over, where do you need to go?
CR: “I would go back to Italy. I used to go to Italy every 4 or five months. I have a strong net and I speak fluently for the last two years. I will see my friends and be surrounded by languages and Once we can, I will definitely return to Italy.
IB: Finally, what’s the next step for you?
CR: “I never say it. The funny thing is, nobody expects Space Daughter. I make things up, but I like the little plots and I love it when no one knows I’m coming.
