An Alien movie directed by the director of the 2013 Evil Dead remake probably wouldn’t be without its intergalactic scares, but Alien: Romulus looks set to go further.
“In fact, there are express sequences in this film that will scare some children who sneak into the film for the rest of their lives,” Isabela Merced, who plays one of the young pickers from the area in the film, told Total Film in our new Thursday issue, July 19, which features the sci-fi horror sequel on the cover.
“You can definitely say goodbye to a 12A,” adds co-star David Jonsson with a laugh. “The space in between with Fede [Álvarez, director] is simply not his style. If you need to go out to scare people, then you scare them. “
“He doesn’t know how not to put that spin on it,” notes the film’s protagonist, Civil War’s Cailee Spaeny, referring to her (literally) visceral reimagining of Evil Dead. “It’s just his instinct. He’s expecting to do anything weird and twisted. And you know he’s given it to her when you’re about to say, ‘Should we do that?’That’s when you know: ‘Okay, Fede is in his sweet spot'”.

Set between 1979’s Alien and 1986’s Aliens (and a thematic combination of both), Romulus sees the characters of Spaeny, Jonsson, and Merced on a project to escape their mining colony when a rescue shipment arrives and offers them a way out. They have some mind-blowing surprises in store when they arrive at a deserted studio facility. . .
Alien: Romulus hits theaters on August 16. And you can read more about this and more in Total Film’s new factor when it hits shelves and virtual newsstands on Thursday, July 19.
