Alien: Romulus has topped the United Kingdom-Ireland draw with a £3. 7m opening weekend, the second-highest start for the monster franchise.
Romulus surpassed the £2. 7m opening of 1997’s Alien: Resurrection and the £1. 6m opening of 1992’s Alien 3, and trailed only the £4. 8m opening of 2017’s Alien: Covenant .
The new film took a £5,538 location average with several sites still to report – also the second-highest of the franchise, behind the £7,595 average of Covenant.
Covenant with £12. 9 million, a minimum overall amount for an opening of this type. Disney hopes to take Romulus beyond that number.
The film knocked out Sony’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover, It Ends With Us, to second place, with the domestic violence drama falling 37. 3% in its second run to £2. 8m, a decent return. It has £11. 4 million to date, already surpassing the £11. 4 million of the previous year’s hit romantic comedy Anybody But You.

Despicable Me 4 took fourth place for Universal, shedding 22% in its sixth weekend with £1. 2m, bringing the total to £38. 8m. The £47 million to £49 million worth of films in the Despicable Me/Minions franchise possibly seems long; But so far, both films have had a long tail, giving number four a chance to end up in that diversity again.
Trafaglar Releasing’s reworking of Henry Selick’s stop-motion animation, Coraline, grossed an exceptional £744,365 from Friday to Sunday. Added to the £509,635 grossed at the occasion cinema on Thursday 15 August, it now amounts to almost £1. 3 million; plus the £8. 7 million earned with its original in 2009.
Revenue in the top five fell 7% to £10. 9m, representing a significant 46. 4% increase compared to last year’s weekend. Warner Bros. thriller Blink Twice offers the best chance to continue this streak forged next weekend. .
M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap dropped out of the top five in its second weekend, falling 47. 9% to £558,581, taking it to £2. 5 million. It is expected to surpass the final totals of Shyamalan’s last two films, Knock At The Cabin (£3. 2 million) and Old (£3. 4 million), in the next fortnight.
Despite dropping out of the top five, Inside Out 2 recorded one of the catches this weekend, dropping just 18% to £506,583 in its tenth session. The animation amounts to £55. 5 million, which is now in the top 40. highest-grossing films of all time and will soon surpass Disney/Pixar’s Incredibles 2 (£56. 2 million).
Warner Bros. ‘ Twisters added £319,940 in its fifth weekend, a 45. 5% drop that took it to £12. 9 million in total.
Bollywood horror comedy Stree 2, the newest Indian film that landed well at the United Kingdom and Ireland box office, averaging £2,070 across 118 sites. Released through Bakrania Media, the film costs £240,147 this weekend and totals £291,805, almost five times more than Stree’s in 2018. £58,697 in total.
Lionsgate’s Borderlands, starring Cate Blanchett, took in £181,104 in its second weekend, a 67. 3% drop above the market average. He has £1. 5 million in total.
Spider-Man 3, Sony’s latest relaunch of the Webslinger series, is £156,677, less than Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, but still a decent result for a relaunch.
Harold and the Purple Crayon added £134,333 in its third weekend for Sony (a 37. 5% drop) to £2m.
After a great start last weekend, Kneecap fell 53. 8% in its second Irish query for Wildcard Distribution to £115,000. The film has £557,610 ahead of its release in England, Scotland and Curzon Wales next weekend.
Black Bear’s longlegs horror film continues to hit cinemas in its sixth weekend, taking in £88,000 for a total of £7. 9 million.
Signature Entertainment’s animation Ozi: Voice of the Forest, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, grossed £86,336 from 390 theaters for an average of £221. The film costs £100,793, including trailers.
AA Films UK’s comedy Khel Khel Mein, released through Bakrania Media, earned £52,616 in its opening weekend averaging £863 on site, and has £66,664 in trailers.
Chinese crime drama Only The River Flows, via Picturehouse Entertainment, grossed £31,522 this weekend, an average of £553. The film costs £40,134, adding up the trailers.
Elysian Film Distribution’s re-release of Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro totaled £10,742 in its third weekend in theaters, and has a decent total of £209,169.
