Activist and actress Alyssa Milano has expressed hope that Hollywood disgraced Harvey Weinstein will face consequences beyond a new sexual assault conviction.
Milano wrote an op-ed published in The Daily Beast days after Weinstein’s previous conviction was overturned in New York. His California conviction stands, but he has been released from Bellevue Hospital in New York for medical examinations.
“Two of rapist Harvey Weinstein’s convictions have been overturned and he has been granted a new trial in New York,” Milano wrote. “And while it is vital to point out that the rapist conviction in California is valid and that the rapist is old, weak, and we will soon die loveless in a mobile prison in one state or another, this injustice is just another example of how all of our American establishments are built to belittle and devalue women; For them, our bodies are commodities to be used, and this will be their undoing.
Milano referred to convicted felon Brock Turner’s three-month sentence, Donald Trump’s loss in his defamation case against his accuser E. Jean Carroll, and allegations against Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) related to sex with minors. as other examples of the “symptom of the disease in our institutions”.
“State after state, white male-dominated states are dehumanizing and appropriating women’s bodies,” Milano continued. “Every branch of our country commodifies and devalues women. “
