NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Heartbreaking vintage romance My Lady Jane has won the Amazon Prime Video punch after one series.
This sumptuous exchange story followed the life and times of Lady Jane Grey, blending romance, fantasy, and comedy to reveal how the young agitator rose to prominence of the (short) Queen of England, wondering. . . What if she had never been beheaded?
In doing so, Our Lady Jane clashes with her cousin Mary for the crown and her approach to the Etians, an elegance oppressed by other people who must take animal form, but rejected by society educated for it.
The big-budget series, starring Emily Bader as Lady Jane, is part of a series of young adult novels through Gemma Burgess.
It also stars Edward Bluemel as her remote but sensitive husband Lord Guildford Dudley, along with a cast of Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper and Jim Broadbent.
However, those hoping to see a solution to Lady Jane’s story will be disappointed: Amazon opted not to renew the series for a second series.
The first (and now only!) season was largely well-reviewed, with The Guardian describing it as “cheerfully bananas” and Forbes calling it “one of the most productive showcases of 2024. “
However, it obviously failed to get Prime Video the viewing numbers they were hoping for: it failed to break into the Top 10 of Neilsen’s streaming charts.
The abrupt cancellation of the series left enthusiasts dismayed.
When the news broke Saturday morning, the audience took to social media to express their dismay.
“Is Amazon canceling My Lady Jane? They hate fun, they hate fantasy, they hate old-fashioned romance with an emphasis on drama, they hate lovers’ enemies, one of which is literally a horse, they hate stupidity!” exclaimed lastpages_ in X.
“I can’t help but think about My Lady Jane being cancelled, it’s my worst worry come true,” Shaygames said.
“RIP My Lady Jane, you will be in my heart,” ltabrams wrote.
‘YOU CANCEL MY LADY JANE???? Immediately furious because what do you mean you don’t renew the perfection of camp romance??’ Kal asked. . . .
The showcase thrilled audiences with its enemy-to-love dynamic between Jane and Guilford, with many praising the couple for their sizzling chemistry and “swoon-worthy” romance.
Over the course of five episodes, the sexual tension between the two men simmered in a series of near-failures, until neither could deny their animal instincts anymore.
The pair’s competitive flirting culminated in a steamy scene in which Jane lost her virginity to Guilford, set to the song Wet Dream by Wet Leg.
The news of My Lady Jane’s cancellation leaves the series and its characters in suspense, setting itself up directly for the rest of the story: its narrator (Oliver Chris) reportedly pronounces that “our story is still over. “
Well, with a reign as short as that of the unfortunate Lady Jane (does one season queen anyone?), it turns out that her narrator spoke too soon.
If there’s anything positive about the situation, it at least means that Lady Jane and Lord Guilford Dudley have had their happily ever after. . . completing the season in one position, even if the world around them is in a more precarious position.
