NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
A horror film described as “cruel” and “the most disturbing release of 2024” is hitting streaming in the UK after shocking audiences on the festival circuit.
The Coffee Table was released in U. S. theaters after participating in film festivals such as Fantastic Fest, Grimmfest, and Soho Horror Film Festival, leading some to abandon screenings early due to the shocking events unfolding on screen.
Directed by Caye Casas, the black comedy follows married couple Jesús (David Pareja) and María (Estefanía de los Santos), who plunge into the deep end of parenthood after welcoming their first child.
One day, they stop by a furniture store to buy a coffee table for their apartment, an undeniable task that leaves the fractured couple arguing and Jesus stubbornly stubbornly stubbornly at the squeaky table he wants. A probably small resolution that he soon reaches because it destroys their lives.
The film debuted at the 2022 Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, and temporarily earned word of mouth as one of the most gruesome films ever released.
And it even proved to be too much for the master of horror himself, Stephen King, when he turned to X to warn the audience about the darkness within.
After watching the film, which is now available to stream in the U. S. “There’s a Spanish-language movie called LA MESA DE CAFÉ on Amazon Prime and Apple. I guess you’ve never, not once in your life, noticed a movie. As dark as this. It’s terrible and also terribly funny. Think of the Coen brothers’ darkest dream.
British horror enthusiasts who need to check their stomachs to oppose the nasty little film will have to wait until May 20 for the Second Sight Films virtual release pads.
The Coffee Table has a solid 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with one of the highest praises calling the film “a horrible way to spend 90 minutes. “
Critics have praised The Coffee Table en masse, with Dread Central calling it “unhappiness cinema at its finest” and “an anxiety-provoking delight in that fear of making you laugh. “
The Guardian said the film had an “appeal to exercise accidents”, while Organ Cin thought it could be “probably the scariest film of this year”.
Starburst magazine praised the “stunning, trauma-bending, boundary-pushing paintings by filmmakers who deeply appreciate the pain of their victims. “The pinnacle of feel-good cinema.
A Collider film criticized Ari Aster’s 2018 horror film Hereditary, saying The Coffee Table is “one of the most disturbing horror films of 2024. “
After its premiere, Casas explained why he wanted to make a film that would chill so many viewers to the bottom of their hearts.
“We wanted to make one of the toughest films ever made, a film that others can’t forget,” Casas told Fangoria.
“It will make them feel very strong emotions, genuine horror without monsters, zombies, ghosts or murderers, with a dining table and the harshest fate you can imagine. “
He continued, “I can only guarantee audiences one thing: if you like strong emotions, if you need to suffer like never before, if you need to feel genuine terror, The Coffee Table is your movie. You never will, I promise you. “
The Coffee Table arrives on virtual platforms on May 20.
