SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Tyler Anderson threw a treble for the first full game of his career, eclipsing a record by Zac Gallen when the San Francisco Giants defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday 5-1.
Mike Yastrzemski and Alex Dickerson tied consecutively with loaded targets in front of the Junior War reliever in the seventh inning to open a tight game. Brandon Belt chose twice and received an RBI.
Yastrzemski also made an impressive defensive play when he crashed into the right field wall to hit Ketel Mars in the sixth inning, helping the Giants win their fifth in a row.
Anderson (1-1) blank all night, allowing an undeserved run while withdrawing 4 goals with a batter. The left-hander gave up 15 days after allowing a double with a punch to Mars in the first inning. Mars also doubled in the ninth. The only other Arizona hit with David Peralta’s single RBI in the seventh.
“It’s great,” said Anderson, who had never played more than 8 innings. “Our paddock has worn out a little bit, so that’s good, especially for me, they probably had to do canopy a lot of the tickets in the games I eded. For them, not having to pitch today is great.
Giants manager Gabe Kapler said he wasn’t thinking much about shooting Anderson, twice as far out of Mars in the ninth made him take a break.
“I imagine if there were some other guy who had been given the support, he would have made me think of Jarlin Garcia (using the reliever), but he kept coming out. It remained effective,” Kapler said. “He won the right every time he finished an inning to return and get the next three batters. I think he hit 91 (mph) several times in the ninth. Just a brave performance.”
Starling Marte scored the Arizona race after making a mistake in the seventh. The Diamondbacks have lost four in a row.
Gallen allowed one run and three hits in six innings. He retired six and walked four, the first 3 batters he faced.
Arizona’s right tied the record for maximum games, allowing 3 earned runs or less to start a run. Gallen’s 21-boot streak tied the mark set through Aaron Sele of the Boston Red Sox from 1993 to 1994.
He also came here after a first race.
Gallen drove through the full bases in 15 pitches, then visited through pitching coach Matt Herges before taking Belt to the ground in a double kill. Yastrzemski scored on the move.
“It’s just a will to check not to let the sleeves explode,” Gallen said. “It’s like that first race: look to minimize the damage. It’s a testament to the guys who make plays. Just one of the things I look at to minimize damage and stay in the game.”
The Giants’ defense rescued Anderson in the sixth inning after hitting Kole Calhoun with a two-out pitch. Yastrzemski had to chase Ketel Mars’ long fly and jumped forward crashing into the padded wall in the right field.
“I’m so excited. I was surprised he did,” Anderson said. “I just wanted to make sure he gave up and didn’t get injured, hitting that wall. Yaz is a wonderful player. He goes after every one of them.
After the Diamondbacks tied the game with an undeserved run through Anderson, the Giants struck out in the seventh. Matt Grace (0-1) threw a couple of interspersed walks around a double through Joey Bart. Yastrzemski and Dickerson followed with War steps to force a couple of runs, and Belt’s bachelor made 5-1.
FAMILY FACES
The 4 “visiting fans” Diamondbacks for this weekend’s San Francisco series are Hall of Fame member Randy Johnson (he won his 300th win with the Giants on June 4, 2009), Luis Gonzalez (had two hits here), Mark Grace (five home runs and one touch) and Roland Hemond. Another great Arizona, Matt Williams, already had a place in the stands for his contributions to the Giants from 1987 to 1996.
COACH’S ROOM
Giants: Austin Slater was placed in the 10-day IL with a slight strain on his left groin that held the base run on Friday night. Slater also had a tight right elbow. “It’s complicated for the club, but it’s even more complicated for Slater,” Kapler said. Array.. RHP Sam Coonrod (grade 1 latitude strain) has introduced a simulated game and may be back soon. Kapler was especially satisfied with Coonrod’s speed and overall health. Array.. Bart, called to be the daily receiver of the team, had a break planned to keep him cool. Array.. De Steven Duggar was called from the education site of choice and started in the middle field.
