An Australian TV host on China’s state broadcaster has been arrested in Beijing as tensions between the two escalate.
The Australian government obtained an “official notification” of Cheng Lei’s detention on 14 August, according to a statement through Marise Payne, Australian Foreign Minister.Consular officials spoke to him via video chat on August 27.
Payne told Sydney radio station 2GB that Cheng is detained in China at no fees and that he could be detained “for months.”
“The procedure within the Chinese formula requires rates to be set at this stage, however, we will continue to look for data on this and how long it can be stopped without tariffs being imposed under the Chinese formula,” he told the radio station..
In a statement, Cheng’s circle of relatives said they were in “close consultation” with the Australian government.
“[We are] doing everything we can as a circle of relatives to help Cheng Lei,” he said.”In China, due process will be observed and we look towards an acceptable and swift conclusion of the matter.”
Cheng, an advertising presenter on CGTN, the foreign arm of China’s public television channel CCTV, which has since removed any reference to him on his online page and on social media.
