Avalanche relies on stars to recover from the series
SEATTLE (AP) — It took Nathan MacKinnon 3 games to win the toughest first-round series of his career.
The Colorado star made things pretty simple with his two goals in Game 3 as the Avalanche bounced back from their first playoff series.
“It’s definitely the hardest first circular I’ve ever been on,” MacKinnon said. “I think in the last few years we’ve been among the most sensible seeds and we haven’t had simple groups by any means, but I think the Seattle team is a 100-point team and they’re actually good, and we’re going to have to keep doing our best to beat them.
MacKinnon, the most productive offensive player on the ice in Game 3 as the Avalanche beat Seattle 6-4 to take a 2-1 lead on the most productive series of seven. Game 4 is Monday night and a Colorado win would give them a chance to close out the series at home on Wednesday.
But MacKinnon wasn’t the Colorado star who stood out in Game 3. Cale Makar had a goal and an assist, and Mikko Rantanen had 3 points, adding the early tiebreaker in the 3rd era and an empty net. Purpose in the last minutes to win the victory.
“For us, everyone needs to up their game and play their part in the right way and help others,” Makar said.
The big game for Colorado’s three stars came when uncertainty arose over Valeri Nichushkin and when he might play again in this series. Nichushkin is out of the team for non-public reasons, Colorado coach Jared Bednar said after Saturday’s win.
Nichushkin tied for fourth place with Colorado with 17 regular-season goals and his goal at the time of Game 2 took the Avalanche out even after Seattle took a 2-0 lead in the first era.
Bednar said Sunday that there is no timeline for Nichushkin’s return. His absence is just one more impediment for the Avs in a season full of them.
“We had to rely even more on our guys and they did an amazing job,” Bednar said.
MacKinnon’s two-goal functionality earned him 10 career scoring postseason games, and only the player so far in Avalanche/Nordiques history to succeed in that record.
He also restored order to the series. Seattle was the largest team in Game 1 and the first stage of Game 2. But for the last 4 eras, the protective champions have obviously been the biggest team in component due to the trio of MacKinnon, Makar and Rantanen advancing.
Delaying them has to be a priority for Seattle if it wants to send the series back to Denver at 2-2.
“There will be changes. Sometimes you just have to play (defense),” Seattle forward Jared McCann said. Makar, guys who can fly on the ice, then you must stay in front of them. You just have to put chips on them. Make it difficult for them to enter the area. I feel like we can do a bigger job on that.
