Bambi’s Upcoming Horror Film Director Compares Film to Classics Like Godzilla in Bold Statement

Continuing the trend of turning beloved stories from the formative years into horror films, the creators of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey are expanding their Poohniverse with Bambi: The Reckoning. This upcoming horror movie puts a terrifying new spin on the classic children’s tale through the gentle fawn to a fatal predator. The director recently made an ambitious comparison, comparing Killer Deer to iconic monster movies like Godzilla.

This reinvention, directed by Unhinged director Scott Jeffrey, promises to give audiences a new point of concern and excitement. And if you ask Jeffrey, the newest movie will do for deer what Jaws did for sharks. In a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, the filmmaker boldly presents some of the most productive horror films of all time and says:

It’s going to be terrifying. When other people see a deer in the wild after this movie, they will run into the hills. This film is as much about the death of childhood as it is about its ruin. Expect bloodshed, tears, and rabbits. . . and a nasty killer deer. The British countryside, after all, will have its Godzilla.

It’s an ambitious comparison, but I must admit that it piqued my interest. A more direct analogy could be that of a Stephen King classic. The film is described as “Cujo meets Jurassic Park”. The plot centers on a mother and son who, after being in a car accident, are haunted by Bambi, a mutated and grieving deer who seeks fatal revenge for his mother’s death.

For ITN Studios and Jagged Edge Productions, Rhys Warrington wrote Bambi: The Reckoning, produced by Scott Jeffrey and Rhys Frake-Waterfield.

Although heavily panned by critics, the first Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was a box office success, grossing over $5 million on an announced budget of $100,000. This led the filmmakers to temporarily expand a sequel, likely addressing some of the criticisms of the original. Horror enthusiasts can now take a look at a multiverse of animated assassins through their favorite fairy tale characters.

This interconnected horror universe will feature standalone films such as Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare and Pinocchio Unstrung, introducing new characters such as Sleeping Beauty, the Mad Hatter, and the Rabbit from Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. All of those characters will be combined in an Avengers-style crossover movie, Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble, planned for the 2025 movie calendar, where they’ll team up to take over the world.

As audiences prepare to delight in this reinvented classic, one thing is certain: this edition of Bambi will not be for the faint of heart. Whether or not this will compare to Cujo, Jurassic Park, and Godzilla remains to be seen.

As the film prepares for release, horror enthusiasts can catch up on the first installment of the Poohniverse by streaming Blood & Honey with a Peacock subscription.
