Barack and Michelle Obama’s 7-time Emmy Award-nominated production company

Barack and Michelle Obama are in the Emmy race! When the 2020 Emmy Awards nominees were announced On Tuesday, former couple’s producer Higher Ground Productions won seven awards.

The production company won nominations for two documentary projects, American Factory and Becoming. The first, a look at the factory of a Chinese company in Ohio, earned nominations for filmmaking, film making and symbol editing, while the second, a documentary covering the life and paintings of the former first lady, identified in cinematography, direction, musical composition and remarkable documentary categories.

“The opportunity to share the story of Michelle Obama, the first Black First Lady, is bigger than anything she may have dreamed of,” Nadia Hallgren, director and filmmaker at Becoming, said in a statement. “The release of Becoming at this specific moment at hitale added unforeseen and even deeper meaning to all of this. Thanks to the Television Academy for this recognition, and thanks to our collaborators of Higher Ground Productions and Netflix. Our team has the honor of getting this special appointment! “

Tonia Davis and Priya Swaminathan, co-directors of Higher Ground Productions, added that they are “very proud” of the film and its director.

“[It’s] a film about Michelle Obama’s confidence in the strength of our stories and coming together with others,” they said in a statement. “Thank you to the Television Academy for this honor and Netflix for believing in Higher Ground’s vision of making paintings based on empathy, attachment and community.”

The Emmy nominations come after American Factory won the Oscar for Best Documentary at the 92nd Academy Awards in February. At the time, the former president celebrated the filmmakers by “telling such a complex and moving story,” while Michelle tweeted that she was “so pleased to see their hearts and honesty recognized.”
