Since the beginning of The Last of Us, several video game enthusiasts have thought that Bella Ramsey will be reinterpreted as Ellie for season 2 of the series.
The justification was that, since there is a five-year jump between the games (and seasons), Bella would be too young and they (Bella has already said that her pronouns are she/they) would not be able to convey the overwhelming physical violence that comes with the season 2 edition of Ellie, decided to avenge us.
There aren’t many people who say that anymore.
First of all, it never made sense and there was never any official indication that HBO or the showrunners planned to recast Bella Ramsey in Season 2. Ramsey, like everyone else, celebrated the early renewal of the series and talked about what they’re like. . looking forward to continue.
As for their age, it turns out that most people don’t realize that although Ramsey plays a 14-year-old version of Ellie, they are 19 in real life, and when The Last of Us season 2 airs , They will be. Being older than Ellie’s character was in the second game.

Then, as for whether or not inflicting the excessive violence that we see on Ellie isn’t easy in the second game, well, I have an episode to show you. Episode 8 offers a glimpse into Ellie’s brutality. They start by biting/breaking David’s finger, and then at the end, they killed James and David with a literal butcher knife in a nearly 1:1 recreation of the game’s sequence.
The series worked on Ellie’s propensity for violence even more than the games, I’d say, and didn’t really have a full plan for the second game when the original was made, so they didn’t know where they would take Ellie. But they surely planted the seeds for Ellie to become a hardened killer (even if you still root for her more commonly) in long seasons of the series, where we heard that the second game would be split into Season 2 and Season 3.
There’s no doubt, surely none, that Bella Ramsey will return for season 2 of The Last of Us. They’ll probably replace your hair and clothes and age them a bit to look less like a girl 14 and older. their true age, but it will be them. The biggest open question is who will play their rival, the muscular Abby, and how they will feel in battle. Which I can’t wait to see.
Update (8/3): For those still wondering whether or not Bella will return, here’s an interview with W talking about the character’s separation procedure now that filming has wrapped:
This is permanent, though, as the interview goes on to communicate about the time between seasons 1 and 2, and how Bella hasn’t starred in anything since season 1 finished filming, but still will:
It remains to be seen what kind of physical transformation Bella will go through for season 2. It’s true that in the game, the new Ellie is taller, more muscular, and tougher than in the first game. In the after-show podcast, the showrunners talk about how what happened in the final episode will replace Ellie forever.
I don’t know if the screen will care too much about Bella’s change in appearance. Once again, Bella already looks very different from Ellie at the beginning, which is absolutely fine, and aside from maybe accepting Ellie’s shorter haircut, I’m not sure it’s incredibly vital. so they can enjoy going to the gym or something, so she’s dressed in Ellie’s tank top. in the second game. Abby, on the other hand, will want an actress who embodies this physical aspect, since she is one of the coolest video game characters in the world, and it would be difficult to completely lose that aspect of the character.
Update (9/3): Things have taken a new turn in the quest to find out who would play Bellay Ramsey’s rival, Abby, in season 2 of The Last of Us. While enthusiasts have long been talking about The Wilds actress Shannon Berry, whose face, at least, looks almost the same as Abby’s, I heard a new call pop up in the conversation. Although that would be less plausible.

That would be Emma D’Arcy, who, like Bella, is a non-binary actress and is also. . . linked to an HBO series Game of Thrones. D’Arcy most recently plays Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon. Fans think D”Arcy has the right look to play Abby, and they know that HBO tends to favor its own veteran actors most of the time.
However, I’d probably be remiss if I didn’t throw a little cold water on this concept to some extent. While yes, I think D’Arcy has “the look” for the role, as I said earlier, HBO has also shown that it rarely engages much with characters like its opposite-numbers play Array as demonstrated through Bella, which worked very well.
Secondly, D’Arcy is 30 years old, a decade older than Bella, and they are both supposed to be around the same age in the game, with Ellie being 19 and Abby in her early twenties. This is due to the age they were for the game. Occasions of the first game final. I guess D’Arcy may play younger but he’s. . . much more youthful.
Third, D’Arcy continues to actively star in House of the Dragon. She’s not like Belle, whose Game of Thrones days are long gone. Although we see Pedro Pascal doing a double feature in The Mandalorian and The Last of Us, two of the biggest exhibitions on television, at the same time he created a Mandalorian delay, and what’s more, he doesn’t want to be under this helmet. I don’t think HBO wants to ruin the House of the Dragon or The Last of Us moment by including D’Arcy on either screen.
So, in my opinion, it is not just a remote project, but it is maximally impossible. While yes, it’s true that choosing to have Abby play nice with Ellie is probably one of the most important aspects of season 2, unlike Shannon Berry. , and as much as I love D’Arcy, I don’t see this happening.
The last of us part 2
I wonder if the screen will think outside the box and cast an athlete, not an actor, given Abby’s sheer physical condition. While yes, it’s possible that the actresses are simply casting themselves for the role, Abby is based on CrossFit super athlete Colleen Fotsch, which makes me wonder if the screen will cast a really wide net for the role instead of casting an actress with a similar face. then send them to the gym to start bodybuilding. But there is still no official news about it, as always.
