There are mind-blowing reconnections in It Comes from America, but keep them away. Prince Akeem de Murphy, now king of Zamunda, returns to Queens to track down his long-lost son Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler) because his country’s sexist policies do not allow any of his daughters to inherit the throne. Lavelle and her mother (Leslie Jones) become the new fish out of water when they travel to Zamunda for a very awkward family reunion.

And Chloé Sévigny is very productive in the role of Lady Susan’s funny American friend.

This charming and nuanced romantic comedy is based on the real-life courtship of comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon. Nanjiani plays an edition of himself, while Zoe Kazan takes on the role of Emily. Their budding relationship is interrupted first by Kumail’s expectation of an arranged marriage to a Pakistani woman chosen by his parents, and then by Emily becoming incredibly ill. Kumail needs to get her back, but to do so he will first have to convince her parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter). We may know how it ends, but the adventure to get there is worth watching.

One of the darkest, sexiest and most intense films of 2016, The Handmaiden tells the story of the devious Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri) and the enterprising Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo), the Japanese professional from Korea. Fujiwara is a con artist who plans to milk a wealthy Japanese heiress for all she’s worth, while Sook-hee is a pickpocket who hires to pretend, you guessed it, the heiress’s maid. But as Sook-hee grows closer and closer to the heiress, alliances are replaced and double crosses become inevitable. The film does not address violence or eroticism, but neither does it shy away from a gripping story or complex characters.

Suspiria, a highly anticipated remake of an old 1977 Italian horror film, stars Dakota Johnson as a young woman who joins a German dance troupe, only to realize that the entire operation is run by witches. (Don’t you hate it when that happens?) Watching the supernatural drama spread is one of the reasons to see this movie; Tilda Swinton represents three other people. In Suspiria, you get a triple dose of Swinton: as a choreographer, a (male) therapist, and an additional role that might be a bit spoilery, but worth fleshing out. Suspiria is one of the videos that other people tend to love or hate, depending on their tolerance for weird gore and a whimsical tone. But it’s better to get something exclusive than anything that plays it safe.

“Creed” is a sports drama film that serves as a spin-off and sequel to the “Rocky” series. The film focuses on Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), the illegitimate son of former heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. Although he never met his celebrated father, Adonis is determined to forge his own path in the world of boxing.
Adonis is looking for Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), his father’s old rival and friend, to exercise him. Rocky, now retired and suffering from personal difficulties, is reluctant to become the mentor of the young boxer. While Adonis works out with Rocky, he faces many demanding situations both in and out of the ring. “Creed” has truly won critical acclaim for its performances, direction and respectful sequel to the “Rocky” saga. – A B

It’s hard to believe that “Beetlejuice” is only director Tim Burton’s second feature film, as his trademark gothic taste is already in full force in this hugely entertaining supernatural comedy. Michael Keaton delivers one of his most memorable performances as the title character, an opportunistic Ghost who captures the concept of tormenting the living when summoned through a recently deceased couple.
Geena Davis and Alec play the couple who are horrified by the new citizens of their once-cozy home and need to scare them away, with Winona Ryder as the sullen teenage daughter of those nasty new owners. “Beetlejuice” is a vibrant, funny, and superbly crafted film that captures all of Burton’s strengths, defining one of cinema’s most unique aesthetics while also telling an artistic and engaging story. -JB

The only Coen Brothers film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, it is one of their darkest films, but also one of their best. The Coens adapt Cormac McCarthy’s dark novel about the devastating consequences that befall a hunter who discovers a box of money left behind after a drug deal goes bad. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is discovered to be the target of ruthless hitman Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), and both are pursued by pragmatic Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones).
Bardem won a well-deserved Oscar for his chilling portrayal of the psychopath Chigurh, one of the most terrifying cinematic villains of all time. The Coens retain their deadpan sense of humor as they bring McCarthy’s harsh story of violence and cruelty to life on screen.
