As in previous editions, The Game Awards 2023 handed out (you guessed it) prizes to the deserving winners and featured several trailers that made viewers spin their heads. However, no moment was arguably more memorable than when Kratos actor Christopher Judge jokingly referred to MW3’s crusade as shorter than his iconic, lengthy acceptance speech at the annual event. Last year.
Now, it’s no secret that MW3’s crusade duration is noticeably shorter than previous episodes, which is why many at the network complained about its content in the first place when it launched. But even though Judge’s joke was meant to be accepted as a jolly swipe, it unfortunately wasn’t well received by some CoD developers, as some promptly took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out the God of War maintainer.
A former Infinity Ward developer said, “The metrics that CoD surely destroys all God of War games (probably combined) are also just as ridiculous (if not more so). “Another engineer at Sledgehammer noted, “Honestly, as CoD developers, they heard a lot worse. But we don’t expect that from a colleague, on an occasion that aims to celebrate this year’s achievements in games. Especially with all the data that has leaked out about its development.
Many, adding CoD news aggregator CharlieIntel, felt that the MW3 crusade joke tasted poorly since “the Sledgehammer team had to create [MW3] in 16 months (and delivered more content than a 3-year progression cycle). However, many of the comments on CharlieIntel’s post weren’t as empathetic to CoD’s developer comments, as one user bluntly stated, “Their reviews make them look worse. It was a joke; you’d think the other COD people would be smart to take them.
Sadly, the rift between CoD devs and the series’ community only seems to grow larger with each passing day, and this latest MW3 campaign joke controversy only reinforces that fact. Only time will tell if the fan base and creators of arguably the world’s most popular FPS series can coexist, but don’t hold your breath.
