Nolan’s Odyssey will bring the “seminal saga of Homer” to IMAX movie screens for the first time and will be a remake of the ancient Greek epic poem first written in the eighth or seventh century B. C.
Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.
For those unfamiliar, The Odyssey follows the journey of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who travels the world for 10 years in an attempt to get home after the Trojan War. While Universal didn’t reveal any further details on Nolan’s The Odyssey, reports have already been painting a picture of the stacked cast the film will have.
Matt Damon was the first person reported to be in talks to star in Nolan’s next film, which marks his return to Universal after 2023’s Oppenheimer, which won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.
In addition to Damon, reports imply that he could be joined by Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o and Robert Pattinson.
We’re obviously excited about Nolan’s next film as we gave Oppenheimer a 10/10. In our review, we said, “A biopic in constant free fall, Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s most abstract yet most exacting work, with themes of guilt writ large through apocalyptic IMAX nightmares that grow both more enormous and more intimate as time ticks on.
“A disturbing, mesmerizing vision of what humanity is capable of bringing upon itself, both through its innovation, and through its capacity to justify any atrocity.”

Oh brother, where are you? It’s my favorite edition of The Odyssey so far. John Goodman as Cyclops is off the chain.
The only literature I was forced to read in high school, I enjoyed reading. I hope justice has been done!
This can be epic. like LOTR epic.
Except maybe I’ll make it a two-part epic and do the Iliad first.
This may be one of the greatest Greek epics of all time.
Bleh. You lost me at the word Zendaya. Gurl can’t act to save her life.
Please be better than Tenet.
I always loved the Odyssey and I feel like Nolan actually has a good shot at pulling it off. The issue is, how do you do the full Odyssey justice in a single film?
If anyone can do justice to an epic like this, faithful to the original but updated for a trendy audience, it’s Nolan. I can’t wait to hear the details. This seems like maybe it’s worth 2 parts, rather than one incredibly long movie. But I accept it as true with him to make this decision.
I hope this will be a good one cause its been a while since Nolan made a good film.
I’m surprised he’s making a mythological film.
Where’s Sean Bean? Not a sequel to Troy via Wolfgang Petersons!!!
I didn’t expect that from Nolan. Now I understand why he praises Gladiator II so much.
I just hope that this is a true epic of ancient Greek swords and sandals and a modern version of the story.
Does this mean that Matt Damon will be Ulysses? He turns out to be the right age for the role.
Exciting stuff. I wonder if he will ever face Virgil’s Aeneid. It is quite epic in itself, as it is a tale of Roman origin animated through Homer’s paintings, taking the attitude of the Trojans fleeing Troy while the Greeks sack the city. They later move to the Italian peninsula with Game of Thrones-like power struggles with the factions already living there.
This will be a new bankruptcy for Nolan; If you can pull it off, there probably isn’t much you can’t do.
It’s unexpected. I’m very interested.
Something tells me that there will be no outrage over the absence of Greek actors. . .
It will be adapted for an audience 😉
Nice, maybe we’ll finally get a worthy successor to the movie with Kirk Douglas after a 100 years.
I have a beautiful view from my apartment in Kansas, the best for this movie.
I can’t help but think of the PBS show Wishbone and it’s telling of the Odyssey.
Completely unexpected, but exciting. Although I would have liked there to be a movie to accompany the Iliad.
What does this have to do with armored helicopters?
Who else thinks Sean Bean is Odysseus like in Troy?
Better be claymation or it’s pointless
