As the film industry as a whole continues to browse what looks like a trail to reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Cineworld, the largest film network of the moment, has issued a reaction to AMC Theaters and Universal to achieve a compromise between virtual theater. home premieres and movies: “We don’t see any ads in this model.”
This quote comes from a longer series of statements that Cineworld CEO Mooky Greidinger made to Deadline, stating, “While we don’t know all the major points and discuss any movement in the industry, we’ll look at it. People deserve to know that Universal’s The first main film doesn’t come in for six months, so there’s no tension here… But obviously we see this as a bad resolution at the wrong time. Obviously, we’re not changing our policy regarding movie distribution just respecting the theatrical display case.”
It should be noted that the compromise between AMC Theaters and Universal has not yet shown any major points on what their agreement entails and for how long, all we know so far is that the film networks are working together. It is unclear how other theatres and film studios can have compatibility with this situation that is coming in the future.
In April, Greidinger made transparent his skepticism about such agreements that would circumvent theatrical releases, providing this in a past dispute between AMC and Universal over high-quality on-demand video releases: “Once we’ll say again that movies that don’t respect the windows will be appearing.” No wonder he hasn’t replaced his brain since.
