Cineworld has announced plans to close six cinemas in the United Kingdom from the primary restructuring plans.
The company, which is part of the world’s second-largest cinema chain, has faced difficulties since the Covid pandemic as audiences have been unable to return to previous levels.
Cineworld, which also owns Picturehouse, took over in July 2023, with debt of almost £4bn. After failed attempts to find a customer for all or part of its sites, the company closed the six sites it deemed “commercially unviable. “
Public representatives of Cineworld denied the media hypothesis that more closures are planned in addition to the six identified.
The restructuring plan still requires court approval, but all Cineworld cinemas in the United Kingdom will continue to operate at least until the end of September.

Reportedly, in July 2024, Cineworld will carry out a primary restructuring, which could be accompanied by closures.
Restructuring a company to rework its balance sheet, restructure its debts and lose money in the company.
This comes after Cineworld emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States last year.
When a business files for bankruptcy (Chapter 11), it means that it intends to reorganize its debts and assets while remaining in business.
The company’s shares have also plunged nearly 99% in the five years to 2023 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the forced closure of its movie theaters.
Then, Cineworld’s United Kingdom collapsed the management on July 31.
The first Cineworld cinema opened in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in July 1996. A Cineworld opened the following year in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
