DAZN and Sky retain the broadcasting rights to Italy’s Serie A

DAZN and Sky “will retain the rights to broadcast Serie A matches in Italy” for the next five seasons after the Italian clubs “today approved bids for a price of at least” $4. 8 billion, just below the annual price of the existing deal. Seventeen of the twenty clubs supported this offer. Serie A “has been exploring the creation of a media platform” to distribute matches to other TV channels “as well as the launch of a subscription service for home videos”. Turin’s president, Urbano Cairo, stated: “To create a Serie A TV channel now. . . it would have meant adding an additional threat to a threatening activity like football” (REUTERS, 10/23).
