As Zack Snyder’s Justice League has already shown, when filmmakers Zack and Deborah Snyder embark on creating directorial montages for their films, enthusiasts will be in for a new experience.
The most recent films to get the luxury remedy in the Snyders’ cinematic universe are the first two parts of their Netflix sci-fi installment, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. Both PG-rated 13, the first component launched on Netflix in December 2023, while the second component debuted on the streamer in April.
New to Netflix on Friday, the director’s cuts of the two films, which are rated R, have new titles and longer runtimes to allow for greater narrative intensity and character development.
As such, Chapter One: Goblet of Blood is 3 hours and 24 minutes long and is 1 hour and 8 minutes longer than Part One: A Child of Fire. Meanwhile, Chapter Two: The Curse of Forgiveness is 2 hours and 53 minutes long, which is 50 minutes longer than the second part: The Scargiver.
During a verbal exchange on Zoom on Monday with the husband-and-wife directing team, Zack and Deborah Snyder explained to me how much more than adding scenes here and there to the original films was necessary to make the director’s cuts.
“I feel like what’s amazing about this process, what’s amazing, is that we made 4 movies,” Zack Snyder said. “People would probably think of it as, ‘Oh, well, you just beat the director. ‘It’s just the same movie and you just added a few shots, but it’s literally 4 other movies, so we had to technique [the movies] that way. It just took a lot of effort, more effort than we thought.
At the center of the original cut of Rebel Moon and the director’s cut is Kora (Sofia Boutella). As a child, Kora was taken from her home and raised as a soldier under the tyrannical rule of Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his militaristic empire known as the Empire, situated on a collection of planets called the Homeworld.
When Kora manages to escape the brutality of the Empire, she discovers peace and a healing path on the remote moon of Veldt, where a farming network harvests grain.
However, Kora’s new lifestyle falls apart when a giant contingent of the Empire, commanded by sadistic Admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein), arrives and temporarily brutalizes Veldt’s leaders.
Noble mandates that the farmers of Veldt produce more grain to feed their foot soldiers than they can obtain, a measure that would necessarily leave the moon’s population starving. Knowing how fatal the Empire is, Kora gathers a group of rebels to try to prevent the army from only taking over Veldt and completely defeating his oppressors.

Boutella embodied the entire character of a Snyder hero
Deborah and Zack Snyder have said that they love everything that Sofia Boutella has brought to Kora because she embodies all the heroic attributes and flaws of the protagonists of their films. As such, Deborah Snyder is proud of how Zack Snyder has put the utmost care into the construction. each of the female characters in her stories and how Boutella has embraced all of Kora’s complexities.
“Kora is a strong character, but also a character who lives in gray, who has done bad things and who cannot forgive herself,” said Deborah Snyder. “I think a lot of times in action and science fiction, female characters are very one-dimensional. So it’s refreshing to have a character who is flawed, who is on a redemption journey, and who has done very questionable, even terrible things, and for her to come back and become that hero.
In the end, Deborah Snyder was delighted with Boutella’s efforts to paint Kora.
“Sophia worked hard, that is, physically and emotionally, without perceiving the nuances of her character,” said the producer. “I love him both as a user and as an actor. “

Without a doubt, the most important thing between the original PG-13 versions of the Rebel Moon videos and the R-rated director’s cuts is that there were no limits in terms of the adult content of the videos.
As such, either director’s versions of Rebel Moon earned their R score from the Motion Pictures Association due to “bloody violence and gore everywhere, sexuality, nudity, and some language. “
Deborah Snyder said the director’s cuts were not made just for the purpose of creating chaos; She admits that seeing blood and gore in some cases makes the videos more fun to watch. More importantly, she explained, extended versions of films give the director a chance to develop the story’s enormous ensemble of characters.
“[The director’s montages are] funnier in a way, more ironic and more satirical. It’s all of those things,” Deborah Snyder said. And for me, you can talk about violence, blood, sex or whatever, but I think it’s the progression of the character that interests you the most because we didn’t have time constraints.
“So for me, the character arcs are much more satisfying, because you see a little bit in each scene that we had to cut [from the original films] to keep it to a certain length. ” she added.

Another explanation for why the Snyders wanted to offer director’s cuts to the first two Rebel Moon films is that they realize that viewers demand those films. The unprecedented debut for a film like Deadpool
“There’s so much going on in the market now with transmitters and there’s so much hardware that there’s a need for something else,” Zack Snyder observed. “I think other people are in a position and say, ‘Really show me anything. ‘Give me an experience. I want a complete experience. ‘”
In addition to having the opportunity to make films with unlimited content, Zack Snyder is pleased that filmmakers like his Man of Steel producer Christopher Nolan have all the runtime they want for their narrative goal.
“Oppenheimer is a great example of videos that go the distance,” said Zack Snyder. “I think that’s what people are looking for: a rich, deep experience in a movie that doesn’t play safely. People think, ‘Well, we’re here. ‘ Let’s pass. We are ready. ” We are sophisticated.
The director’s cuts of the Snyders’ films – Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Goblet of Blood and Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: The Curse of Forgiveness – are streaming on Netflix.
