Details of the 4K Blu-Ray box from the ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy are announced, adding Amazon’s very good limited edition

It has been relatively quiet on the front of Blu-ray 4K in recent months, as the effect of COVID-19 on the film industry has noticed that the release of new titles has dried up a bit. Today, however, there is smart news for film and home theater enthusiasts, as Universal Pictures announces the preparation of a 4K Blu-ray box release of the Back To The Future trilogy for release on October 20.

Better yet, Universal is pushing the ship when it comes to the presentation of its newly remastered 4K edition of this beloved movie series.

Each “standard” box, for example, presents the package discs in a hot door-shaped packaging flavor with photographs and movie posters. Better yet, the special editions that Universal is putting in position for Best Buy and Amazon.

The levitating Hoverboard will also be available in Target, but only with the HD Blu-ray version. And the 4K Blu-ray will actually be the one for you, given that Universal has taken the trouble to create a new 4K master logo to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the original movie.

It’s also wonderful to see that, according to Universal data in the 4K Back To The Future Blu-ray box, the package will come with a seventh Blu-ray (in addition to the 3 4K comics and 3 expected maximum HD comics) containing more than an hour of never-before-noticed new releases.

These come with rare audition sequences through Hollywood stars Ben Stiller, Kyra Sedgwick, Jon Cryer, Billy Zane, Peter DeLuise and C. Thomas Howell; An excursion to the accessories and memes of the film presented by co-recordist and producer Bob Gale; A review of the new BTTF music screen; and a special episode of the YouTube series “Could You Survive Movies.”

The new extras subscribe to a vast collection of additional documents published in the past that have been discovered alongside the films on their individual albums, and according to Universal’s release text, the title-specific extras will appear in 4K and HD Blu-ray discs.

I will provide the full list of extras at the end of this article. First, however, there are some interesting questions about the transfers to be covered.

For starters, in addition to the fundamental HDR10 movement you get with all 4K Blu-rays, 4K Back To The Future discs will bring the Dolby Vision and HDR10 masters. This means being able to take advantage of the increased scene-by-scene knowledge offered by those formats (to help TVs get better image results), no matter what TV logo you own. It’s a shame your TV supports HDR10 or Dolby Vision, rather than sticking to the industry-popular HDR10 format.

It’s also comforting to know that all 3 movies will appear in 4K on high-capacity BD-100 discs, which on bd-66 discs smaller than those some film studios (especially Disney) use for their 4K Blu-ray releases. This provides more area of knowledge for 4K Blu-ray masters so that, in theory anyway, they can appear with less compression.

As if all this wasn’t exciting enough, the 3 videos will appear on Blu-ray 4K with object-based Dolby Atmos soundtracks, while the most productive sound features you can have on Blu-ray HD are DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks. Although before purists get angry with these new mixes, the films will also be available in their original Dolby Digital 2.0 format.

Finally, here is the full list of additional features on all the disks of the new Back To The Future 4K Boxset package:

I have spent the last 25 years writing about the global generation of home entertainment, first in Home Cinema Choice magazine, where I became deputy editor, and for the more than 20 years as an independent.
