When it comes to the appearance and visual taste of a movie, TV screen or video game, it all starts with the conceptual artist. This applies if the name in the query is an adaptation of a pre-existing asset or an original new logo idea. Take, for example, our recent highlight of Danar Worya’s paintings in The Last of Us: Part II, which featured the first designs of moments and grades that are now iconic. It is with this spirit that we put our Indie Spolight at the highlight of the complete conceptual artist, the virtual painter and the visual effects artist Didier Konings, whose paintings can be noticed on the screens large and small of the past, the supplier and, of course, the future.
Konings has painted full-time in a design studio in Los Angeles for more than five years. As a matte virtual painter and leading conceptual artist, he has painted on several blockbusters (Wonder Woman, Rampage, Stranger Things and Mouse Guard, to name a few) and has delivered iconic conceptual design paintings and memorable visual effects for those high-level productions. . Array Again this year, Konings began working in partnership with Mauricio van Hasselt at Nightroad Studios LLC, which specializes in conceptual art and other production and progression services. Nightroad Studios is also aligned with StommelHaus, directed through cinematographer and colorist Clifton Stommel. Together, the studios expand their internal projects in the form of short films, such as Koning’s award-winning short film, Uncario.
Nightroad Studios and StommelHaus are turning this short film into a feature film with a monetary partner, a script through Evelyn Stommel and directed by Konings himself. The flagship short film, directed and designed through Didier, shot in Iceland, Amsterdam and Los Angeles, and recently won the awards for Best Director, Best Short Film of Science Fiction, Outstanding Achievement in Production Design and finalist for Best Short Film. Film at the Los Angeles International Film Festival (Indie Short Fest.) We can highlight some visually striking looks in this short film below, plus much more.
Today, Konings will offer his paintings on David Petersen’s Mouse Guard limbo adaptation in a special appearance on the existing OnlineCon (and free!) De Petersen. We can advance some behind-the-scenes looks of this task below, however, Konings has also shared more of his individual contributions to main films and TELEVISION titles.
