Dune: Prophecy is one of the big releases on the 2024 TV release calendar and largely mirrors one from Warner Bros. DC’s The Penguin series will delve into Gotham’s criminal underworld as brought by Matt Reeves’ Batman, and the upcoming Welcome To Derry will explore the story of the spooky setting of Andy’s IT: Chapter One and IT: Chapter Two Muschietti. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune: Part Two are also part of this great project, as audiences will soon be able to revel in more sci-fi majesty with Dune: Prophecy.
The new screen has been in the works for some time now, it was first announced in June 2019 under the name Dune: The Sisterhood, and there have been some progression hurdles along the way, but now, after all, the screen is almost here. Dune: Prophecy’s release strategy has changed over time, and not just because the series took several years to come together. When it was first announced, the concept was for it to be an exclusive edition for Max subscribers, but plans have since been superseded. and will now cease to be an HBO original series in November 2024.
Of course, like all HBO programming (including House Of The Dragon and more), episodes of Dune: Prophecy will premiere on the premium cable channel and will also get a first simulcast on Max the night they air.
The first look at Dune: Prophecy appeared online in mid-May 2024, but it was in July 2024 that enthusiasts were able to see the first full look at the upcoming HBO series. There’s obviously an aesthetic continuity with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, but there’s an absolutely different narrative at play and a whole new collection of characters. This is largely because there is a significant difference between the blockbuster sets and those in the series.
Frank Herbert and Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Dune is set about 20,000 years in the future, but Dune: Prophecy will go back in time, especially at the halfway point. The series is set 10,000 years before Dune, but still maintains strong ties to the history of the greatest hits through its characters.
Valya and Tula Harkonnen (ancestors of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Lady Jessica and Paul Atreides and many others) will be the central protagonists of the series, and their movements will have major consequences for the universe, as the story will see them shape the exceptionally harsh . Devout sect known as Bene Gesserit.
Here’s the bad news: Fans probably won’t see much of Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Fergusson, Javier Bardem, or any of the other Dune movie stars in Dune: Prophecy. Sure, visions of the future exist in this universe, but we must remember that the story takes place thousands of years before the events of Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two. That said, the sci-fi series has assembled its own perfect cast.
Emily Watson and Olivia Williams will play Valya and Tula Harkonnen in Dune: Prophecy. First cast in October 2022, Shirley Henderson was originally cast in the supporting role. Henderson left the task amid behind-the-scenes reorganizations in February 2023, and Williams replaced her as Tula about 4 months later, when Anna Foerster joined the show.
To further increase his credits among fans of the genre, Mark Strong will play Emperor Javicco Corrino (an ancestor of Christopher Walken’s Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV in Dune: Part 2), and will be joined in the royal circle of relatives via Jodhi May as Empress Natalya. . and Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez (according to Deadline).

As Dune: Prophecy is about to be released, Alison Schapker will be credited as director and producer, and Anna Foerster will direct the pilot. . . But the full behind-the-scenes story on screen is a bit complicated, so buckle up. .
When Dune: Prophecy was announced, it was said that Denis Villeneuve would direct the pilot and Jon Spaihts would write the script, but that artistic team didn’t stick around. A month later, Good Girls Revolt author Dana Calvo signed an overall deal with Legendary Television Studios and became co-showrunner of the Dune series with Spaihts. This partnership only lasted a few months, as The Hollywood Reporter announced in November 2019 that Spaihts would be stepping down from the position (he is still an executive producer).
Behind-the-scenes adjustments and the pandemic put the project on hold, but Diane Ademu-John was hired as showrunner in July 2021. About a year later, Denis Villeneuve stepped down as director, while immersed in the process of creating Dune. : Second part. Chernobyl director Johan Renck has been hired to direct the first two episodes of Dune: Prophecy in April 2022.
Production on Dune: Prophecy (which then still used the current name Dune: The Sisterhood) began in late 2023 in Budapest, but reorganizations continued behind the scenes. Like John Spaihts, Diane Ademu-John stepped down while remaining on board with the project as a producer, and Alison Schapker have become the new sole showrunner. It was then reported a few months ago that artistic adjustments had been made during a planned break in filming, as Johan Renck’s “auteur approach” didn’t fit very well with the aesthetics of the franchise that Denis Villeneuve had established for himself with Dune: Part One.
In June 2023, filmmaker Anna Foerster signed on to direct the pilot and other episodes of the series, and despite ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, production was able to continue thanks to a contract with British Equity (which is the same reason). The HBO series House Of The Dragon was able to continue filming despite work conflicts).
It’s unclear when production ended, but according to an interview with Pierre Gill on Collider, it was before the start of 2024.
