EXCLUSIVE interview with PUNISHER MAX: Marvel artist Leandro Fernandez talks about Frank Castle

Frank Castle is one of the most popular antiheroes in Marvel comics. Given the love that enthusiasts have for the character, adding Bernthal’s vision on Netflix, it is strange that he was originally created as a supporting character in a Spider-Man story.

There have been many titles with The Punisher over the years, with Punisher MAX among the most mature in the group. Written through the well-known scribe Garth Ennis (preacher), the series presents works through Leandro Fernandez (Wolverine).

At Comic Book Movie, we’ve organized a series of exclusive interviews with the creators of the comedybook series The Old Guard in the new Netflix original adaptation. We spoke to editor Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernández, and we had the opportunity to learn a little more about the Marvel characters Fernandez contributed to the art.

Find out what Fernandez has to say about his paintings about Punisher MAX, Wolverine, The Old Guard and more. If you want to listen to the audio component, you can do so by following the podcast link at the bottom.

Joe: I’m curious to know if your delight with Marvel helped create The Old Guard.

Leandro Fernandez: I painted a lot on Punisher MAX with Garth Ennis. It’s been a long career up my style, hard paintings and my chores.

I’ve painted with many very smart writers on other projects. I even had the ability to paint with Greg on Wolverine for Marvel in 2003 or something. So, maybe that was the component of what could happen in the years that might happen. What it means to paint with Greg is very different from running with other writers, so this can have an effect on my paintings in The Old Guard.

Joe: Do you have a favorite character?

Leandro Fernandez: I don’t know if I can make a selection related to the character. I’m talking about The Punisher because he’s the character I’ve worked with the longest time.

But I enjoyed running in Wolverine, enjoyed running on this character and enjoyed running with Greg. Not so much in the aspect of superheroes, but in the aesthetic aspect, of course.

Joe: What kind of artists are you looking to cheer you up when drawing comics?

Leandro Fernandez: It usually needs to be something that renews my motivation because I try to bring from different sources and be inspired by different things.

I’m not just talking about comics, I like to be encouraged through painters and filmmakers, and they encourage me through music, all that makes me feel hooked on the global. There are many other people all over the world who pay close attention to and, of course, adjust all the time.

It’s harder than it looks. Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a secret mercenary organization welded in combination with a mysterious inability to die has been fighting to protect the world from mortals for centuries. But when the team is recruited to adopt an emergency project and their ordinary talents are suddenly exposed, it is up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the last soldier to sign up for their ranks, helping the organization eliminate the risk of those looking to reproduce and monetize their strength through any necessary means.
