For the first time, Facebook deleted a message from President Donald Trump for violating his COVID-19 misinformation policy.
Trump posted a video of an interview with Fox News on Wednesday in which he falsely claimed that young people were “almost immune” to the disease. CNN reporter Donie O’Sullivan captured the message in a screenshot before it was removed from the platform.
Comparing young people to adults, Trump said they “have a much more potent immune formula than we do in a way.” He also tweeted the video.
“This video includes false statements that a other people’s organization is immune to COVID-19, which is a violation of our destructive COVID disinformation policies,” a Facebook representative told Business Insider.
A framework of developing studies suggests that young people can transmit COVID-19 like anyone else, although studies believe their infection rates are not properly reported because they are asymptomatic and have largely been excluded from clinical trials.
Facebook has already implemented tags on Trump’s misleading mail order messages and got rid of a cross-check ad containing a Symbol Related to the Nazis. But the company said so the first time it deleted a message for violating its incorrect information policy against the coronavirus, according to New York Times reporter Davey Alba.
Facebook has faced increasing tension in recent months to adopt more powerful stances against misinformation and hate speech on its platform. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg defended the company’s resolve to eliminate previous Trump’s debatable messages this year, suggesting that Minnesota demonstrators protesting the death of George Floyd would face violence.
