The reception to Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout series has been spectacular, racking up top scores from critics and plenty of praise on social media. It’s a faithful adaptation of the game’s universe while forging its own path, and promises to be a huge boon for Amazon with a likely season 2 on the way.
I’ve heard a lot from other people who think it was the most productive video game adaptation ever made. Or at least more wonderful than a screen, perhaps, The Last of Us, the high-profile adaptation of HBO’s Emmy-winning series Naughty Dog. . It’s subjective, of course (Maybe I tend to agree? However, they are right in other respects. ) But I tried to address this “curse of video games” issue and remind everyone, as wonderful as Fallout is, that there are four other TV series based on games in the modern era that have received better reviews. Here is the list, as well as some other systems whose context has been less evaluated.
There’s a variety on this list, but as you can see, most popular video game adaptations, animated or live-action, have been reviewed pretty well with a few exceptions. Even the second-lowest-rated show on the list, Twisted Metal, was well-liked by fans and was given a second season.
Esoteric
As for the five most sensible, Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are two of the only 100 percent better series out there on Netflix, especially with viewership scores that are also so high (ah, what about Fallout’s Ella Purnell? She voiced Jynx in Arcane). The Last of Us is definitely the highest-profile live-action hit on this list, which is why it makes those comparisons. I would say that the original Castlevania animated series introduced this totally new era. And while I don’t like its follow-up to Nocturne, I actually don’t think it’s any bigger than the original, or Fallout, or twisted metal. Interestingly, Fallout would be in seventh position on this list in terms of audience score, which I find surprising.
Despite the “fifth” place, I’m deeply inspired with Fallout because unlike The Last of Us, which is a clever but very grounded apocalyptic story, Fallout had to make an action comedy at a totally different point with no source to fall back on. And it’s easy to see how it could have touched the players but not the general public. Instead, it turns out to have touched everyone. I’m hoping for an announcement of season 2 as soon as possible.
