Film on the Rocks is back.
The popular Red Rocks film series Amphitheatre, which would have celebrated its 21st season earlier this year, is returning pandemic restrictions as a planned out-of-date series through Denver Film.
“It took me a little while to coordinate the details,” said Keith Garcia, artistic director of Denver FilmCenter’s Sie FilmCenter and a long-time Film on the Rocks programmer. “But we sought to make sure that in the midst of all the drive-in appearances, ours was the most productive imaginable and had our seal of quality.
From August 13-16, Denver Film will screen another 4 titles weekly with up to 300 cars on a price ticket for each event. Each film will be displayed on an LED screen located in the parking lot of Lot 2 of Red Rocks South Bass, with a sound transmission via a designated FM radio frequency, Denver Film officials said. Guests must remain inside their vehicle for the duration of the events.
The screen, which Denver Film rents, is Colorado’s largest drive-in screen, according to Denver Film, and marks the first time Red Rocks has enjoyed drive-ins.
Denver Film, which hosts the Denver Film Festival, has invested in virtual film in recent months. But Garcia is delighted to show films in their original glory on the big screen, and in an environment that is unaffected by traffic and city lights, as are some movie parks in the metropolitan area.
“What excited me the most was the opportunity to manage anything in progress,” said Garcia, who hopes the series will go well beyond the first 3 weeks of programming announced today. “Favorite videos are fast food from people on this pandemic, so we’re looking to offer a combination of Film on the Rocks’ favorite movies” and new titles.
In fact, some of the titles scheduled for season 21 now sunk, which takes up the big amphitheater with an average attendance of another 8,000 people, will appear in this lineup, such as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”. (see full program below).
“But we still didn’t need to throw the whole kitchen sink away,” Garcia said. “So we start with videos that wink at the place, like “Grease” and “Straight Outta Compton”, which I hope will be a new classic.”
Tickets for Film on the Rocks: Drive-In Pass on sale starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11 at denverfilm.org or redrocksonline.com/film. They charge $59.50 depending on the car corresponding to the night. and come with a package that comes with “two Bottles of Coca-Cola product, City Pop popcorn and M’s and Twizzlers the length of a movie theater,” Denver Film said in a press release. In addition, Chick-Fil-A sandwiches will be available for discounted online advance shopping or cashless payment on site (including sandwiches, biscuits, chips and drinks).
The red rocks will open at 6:00 p.m. movie nights, with screenings from 7:30 p.m.
“The plan is to carry it out in November and use this LED display as a component of the Denver Film Festival, which will open at Ellie (Caulkins Opera House),” said Britta Erickson, director of the Denver Film Festival. “Some vendors need their movies to be screened only in theaters, and we’re negotiating with them to see if the drive-in screen matches the bill.”
