Film production brings visibility and a few to reruns in the region
Summer Camp, a comedy hitting theaters today starring Kathy Bates, Diane Keaton and Alfre Woodard, will have upstate faces appearing as reunion campers in the film.
The film was made at Camp Pinnacle in Flat Rock, North Carolina, and asked citizens on both sides of the border to complete the scenes.
According to Karlie Loland-Riger, the project’s casting director, her team recruited more than 1,300 domain extras and spent $10 million on the North Carolina sites, which also included sites along the Nantahala River, Blue Ridge Community College, Wingate University, Shoal. Creek Farm and Pardee Hospital. He said 80% of the team is from the Carolinas.
These faces included Joey Freeman, Dede Norungolo, Patricia Brewster-Terrell, all from Greenville; Bill and Pam Havice of Clemson; and Cindy and Jim Kennedy of Landrum, who worked on the set of Camp Pinnacle near Flat Rock.
“I worked 25 days out of the nearly six weeks of filming,” said Cindy Kennedy, who served as Bates’ backup and stand-in on the production. “We worked on set before the main actors arrived, as well as between takes, as a cameraman. And lighting adjustments occurred, and after the lead roles were over to help finish a scene. “
“Our interactions with the main cast included brief greetings as we crossed paths to replace the sets on set,” he said. “My favorite moment of filming was between scenes, one day when Alfre Woodard and I sang the popular song ‘Molly Malone. ‘and we danced in combination in front of the cast and crew, after which we earned a standing ovation. “
Her husband Jim was on set for nine days, filling in for Levy. “By sheer coincidence, Eugene and I were born in the same city in Canada: Hamilton, Ontario,” he said. “We had several conversations about the local professional football team, rivalries between the top schools, and the Niagara Escarpment that divides the city. “
The Havices, retired professors and staff members from Clemson University, enjoyed 3 days on set. They can be seen mixing and shuffling the opening series on the opening day of the convention and before the opening ceremony.
“I was on set as an additional for a total of four weeks,” Freeman said. “During this time, I filmed canoe rides on the bottom lake while Keaton and Levy paddled. “
In addition to the lake scene, Freeman included a food match in a dining hall in which everyone engaged in a real food fight. Norungolo also in the food battle.
“I spent three days there and was able to sit at a table next to the main actors in the dining room,” he said, adding that it was wonderful to be able to offer both genuine and fake food in many takes. “When we saw the first trailer, it was exciting when Joey captured a symbol of me throwing food and posted it to me online. ” The Greenville local shared that her older sister attended Camp Pinnacle in her youth, which encouraged her to submit a photo to the casting agency.
Norungolo and Freeman will likely appear on screen in a camp opening series when campers at the assembly register on the first day. They also participated in a combination between Bates, Keaton and Woodard with Levy, as well as fellow actors Dennis Haysbert. Josh Peck, Nicole Richie, Betsy Sodaro and Beverly D’Angelo.
“It’s going to be exciting to see how all the sequences come together,” Norungolo said. “I probably wouldn’t know until I’m in the theater watching the movie if I’ve done it in the blender or if I’ll be in the blender. “
Freeman believes he can also be seen at an awards ceremony, in a campfire scene and in a segment where Woodard fights with his partner.
“Me, because an independent manufacturer saw a photo I posted on social media when I turned 60 3 years ago,” he said. “So I signed up for acting categories at the Entertainers Life Bootcamp in Los Angeles. Since summer camp, I’ve been in. . . Misery loves company, Loyalty above all, Not quite my Christmas, Holiday Inn and Fight Night.
