Spoilers below for Five Nights at Freddy’s, so beware if you haven’t seen it in theaters or with a Peacock subscription yet.
Even without an overabundance of promotional tie-ins to fall back on, Five Nights at Freddy’s still managed to weigh in at the box office while delivering a horror-tinged adaptation that gamers were much kinder to than critics. Audience love for the film was earned in large part thanks to the tactics in which director Emma Tammi and the rest of the artistic team paid homage not only to the story-rich source material, but also to the fanbase itself. Specifically, I’m referring to the notable cameos from popular YouTubers MatPat (from Game Theory) and FNAF lover CoryxKenshin, as well as the franchise’s unofficial theme song, directed via The Living Tombstone.
I had the pixelated excitement of speaking with Emma Tammi, director of Five Nights at Freddy’s, about adding the 3 aforementioned elements to the live-action canon, and her enthusiasm for the looped appearances was downright palpable. So I think it would be a smart concept. delve into it now, but that’s just a suggestion – a CinemaBlend suggestion (I think/hope MatPat approves of it).
YouTube speculator extraordinaire Matthew Patrick, better known to his enthusiasts as MatPat, has spoken at length about Five Nights at Freddy’s in a more eloquent and thoughtful way than anyone else online, with many hours of game theory faithful to Scott Cawthon’s ongoing series. In fact, the subscriber base had its own hopeful assumptions about if and how he could appear in the FNAF movie, and there was a lot of jubilation when he gave the impression of being a bartender running around at Sparky’s Diner. As it turned out, it was one of the first sequences shot for the film, and Emma Tammi told me that her enthusiasm went a long way toward getting the production off to a clever (animatronic) start. In his words:
MatPat was a very important cameo in this movie. We knew the enthusiasts would love it, they would love it, they would love to see him in this movie, and the way the schedule worked out, MatPat starred in our first day of filming. And not only is he the most likeable, energetic, and kind guy (who also happens to be a pretty talented performer), but he also brought so much power to that first day of filming that he seemed representative of the enthusiast base, literally leaving everyone who was there. You know, “Guys, everybody’s so excited. It’s in spite of everything that’s going on. And I don’t know, there’s something symbolic about having it there on the first day that I still remember and I’m very grateful for, because I think it all started with a genuine reminder of who this movie is for, and that we had a genuine purpose here in terms of making a wonderful movie. So it was literally special to have him there, especially on the first day.
As cool as it would have been if MatPat’s character had taken everyone’s lunch orders without any memorable dialogue, the scene featured a glorious baseball reference in which he refers to the difference in perceived importance between the small breakfast and the lunch as “just a theory. ” ”. A risk-free moment for strangers, but an incredibly attractive few seconds for those in the know.
Another murderous appearance from Five Nights at Freddy’s came later in the film, when Coryx Kenshin appeared on screen as a taxi driver. Certainly, this moment was already teased in the trailers, so enthusiasts were already waiting for the arrival of the YouTuber. (And the first millisecond it was on screen drew a sizable crowd to the theater where I saw it on opening night. )However, his got hereo stood out even more, when Coryx Kenshin returned in the mid-credits sting, in which his nap was interrupted through the diminutive Balloon Boy threat. When I asked Emma Tammi about this laughing scare, here’s what she told me:
Balloon Boy ended up being one of my favorite Henson creations of the entire movie. I’m obsessed with Balloon Boy. Es great. But the most sensible thing is that we were able to pair it up in this final moment of Balloon. Guy with Cory, who’s a big YouTuber on Five Nights at Freddy’s, and it’s a particularly special moment because he was given to be a part of it. So now you know, you have to come out on a high note.
While there’s a chance that enthusiasts will see MatPat return as one of the survivors of Five Nights at Freddy’s, assuming the director’s hopes for a sequel come true, I don’t have the same hopes for Coryx Kenshin’s cab driver. I mean, he’s already survived a stage with Golden Freddy in the backseat, and I can’t believe he’s going to make it out alive, unless the mini-antagonist really wants to be taken somewhere.
Even if his character dies, it turns out he’d be welcome back if that option was available. Emma Tammi gave Cory and MatPat props to display and carry out fun activities that didn’t require any prior knowledge to maintain. amusing.
I think what’s great about MatPat and Cory in this movie is that their paintings are so clever and their moments are so good that if you don’t know who they are, it’s not a distraction. And I think for the fans, to know who they are, it’s a huge moment. But I think they’re incorporated into this film, as harmoniously as all of our actors. So that was something I was really proud of. They’ve done such a smart job that I hope they have a lot of acting tasks after this if needed. [Laughs. ]
I don’t know if enthusiasts have yet started the For Your Consideration campaigns for MatPat or CoryxKenshin, but it would be wonderful if one or any of them could turn the cameos of Five Nights at Freddy’s into long-term film and television roles. I also have a lot of free time to devote to other people’s projects, but still.
However, prior to Balloon Boy’s final appearance, Five Nights at Freddy’s initiated the biggest fandom-specific needle drop possible, with The Living Tombstone’s first hit from their initial trilogy of game-inspired themes. The 2014 bop, simply titled “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” officially went gold on August 6, 2023, a testament to its popularity. Then, of course, I also had to ask Emma Tammi if this song would serve as the best counterpart to the score composed by A Newton Brothers. She said to me:
yes, I mean, I know enthusiasts have been asking for this for a while. [Laughter. ] So it’s a priority. We were also very fortunate to have them on set, which was fun. Every time someone had a connection to the game and the fan base, every time they came and made a stop on set, it was a very exciting moment for us. But yes, they were excited and we were really excited to be able to come up with that song at the end of the movie.
I can only hope that it was a similar joy for The Living Tombstone musicians Yoav Landau and Sam Haft to place themselves among the characters and songs to which the former had given lyrics just a decade earlier. by themselves outside the world of Five Nights at Freddy’s, but the game’s fandom will appreciate the musical trios they created.
Hopefully, all this communication about FNAF’s cameos and music will get everyone to watch the movie again, so that Universal and Blumhouse know without a doubt that we want the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie on Halloween, as well as a bunch of genuine movies. Mmm, a haunted pizza.
