Flipboard launches Flipboard TV loose with new content from tons of independent publishers, TV channels and producers

Flipboard TV’s ad-supported edition is now available on all devices.

REDWOOD CITY, California, August 27, 2020 / PRNewswire / – As of today, Flipboard users in the U.S. have free access to Flipboard TV with thousands of videos from global publishers, local TV channels and now also from independent video producers. Samsung Galaxy device owners continue to have exclusive access to the high-end Flipboard TV. In addition to the new ad-supported viewing experience, they can move on to a subscription-based ad-free video experience.

For this release, Flipboard expanded the number and type of media associations. Hundreds of publishers now offer video streams on Flipboard, adding Dow Jones, Gannett, Hearst Magazines, Complex Networks, Minute Media, A360 Media, Group Nine Media, The Recount, Bonnier Corp, Refinery29 and Vice Media Group, and Penske Media Corporation with brands such as Rolling Stone and Variety. Euronews, Tribune Publishing and dozens more videos will be available through a new partnership with VideoElephant.

In addition, you can now have videos from many independent manufacturers on Flipboard. For example, Flipboard users can watch and stay with the vloguera Jessica Neistadt, filmmaker Gene Nagata aka Potato Jet and video journalist Johnny Harris through a new partnership with influential firm Spacestation Integrations. Other independent creators joining Flipboard include serial entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, filmmakers from AudPop and Underknown, a video series manufacturer such as What If and How To Survive.

Users can access Flipboard TV in a new segment on the Explorer tab. The video also adds deeper into all the fun of Flipboard with new tactics to notice individual clips as well as video-only streams. For the first time, the video plays locally on Flipboard, allowing for greater recommendations for related videos and giving users more playback commands to seamlessly move to the next video.

New pre-roll ads today Flipboard is also starting to serve pre-roll video classified ads on its platform, responding to a developing call from advertisers for high-quality, secure virtual video reports for logos on mobile devices. The increase in the number of videos on the platform ranked ads to a significant increase in Flipboard’s video ad inventory, allowing logos to expand their success and interact with fast audiences. Lexus is one of the first logos to run pre-roll classified ads on Flipboard with videos from its national logo campaign.

Flipboard uses a revenue-sharing style for this new form of monetization, offering publishers and creators a new source of revenue. At the same time, this style encourages editors and creators to harness the strength of conservation in Flipboard by using storyboards. For example, several independent video makers represented by Spacestation Integrations will use Storyboards to organize their videos into new viewing experiences, expanding and making their content more visible while creating a new monetization channel on Flipboard.

A video delight For media corporations and creators who post videos on Flipboard, a new video tab is added to their profile pages. And now Flipboard Locals will offer videos of local newspapers and TV channels, a significant component of local news consumption.

Users can keep one of those video streams, as well as the 20 Flipboard TV channels on high-level topics like travel, politics, local, lifestyle, sports and news. Videos are now also displayed in the user’s “For You” thread, custom content based on editorial and algorithmic curation, which is the first thing everyone sees when they open the app or site.
