Remembering Gene Wilder, a 2023 documentary about the life and career of the legend of Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, is one of Netflix’s new releases this week.
In addition to playing Willy Wonka in the beloved 1971 family film, Wilder starred in director Mel Brooks’ film classics, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and The Producers. Wilder also teamed up with the wonderful comedian Richard Pryor in the acclaimed sitcoms Stir Crazy. and Silver Streak.
Remembering Gene Wilder debuts on Netflix on Thursday. Wilder, born Jerome Silberman on June 11, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, died of headaches caused by Alzheimer’s disease on August 29, 2016, in Stamford, Connecticut, at age 83.
Directed by Ron Frank, Remembering Gene Wilder features interviews with film luminaries such as Brooks, Alan Alda and Carol Kane, as well as archival footage of Pryor, Wilder and his late wife and Saturday Night Live star Gilda Radner.
Among those interviewed for the documentary is also Peter Ostrum, who played the role of Charlie Bucket alongside Wilder in Willy Wonka.
Remembering Gene Wilder also evokes Wilder’s family life that dates back to his childhood. Recalling why he replaced his birth name with Gene Wilder, the actor says in the film’s trailer: “I didn’t think Jerry Silberman sounded good. I wanted to be. . . wilder.
The film grossed just over $157,000 when it opened domestically in theaters in March. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the documentary a “new” score of 86% based on 35 reviews.
Among the films debuting on Netflix this week is the Netflix original documentary, Mysteries of the Terracotta Warriors, which will premiere on the streaming service on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Netflix’s animated film, Ultraman Rising, debuts on the streamer, along with the 2023 documentary Tell Them You Love Me.
On Friday, June 7, Netflix’s original film, Hit Man, premiered and temporarily climbed to the most sensible spot on the streaming service’s list of the 10 most sensible videos, displacing the new successful addition Godzilla Minus One.
Hit Man tells the crazy true story of Gary Johnson (Glen Powell), a teacher who worked as an undercover hitman.
Adria Arjona also stars in the crime comedy as Maddy, a housewife whom Gary dissuades from beating her husband, to start a romantic date with her.
However, the romance is confusing from the beginning, as Maddy does not know Gary’s true identity and the scenario puts their lives in danger.
