Gerard Butler and Mike Colter talk about the new action-adventure thriller ‘Plane’

The new action mystery “Plane” will be released in theaters on Jan. 13, directed by Jean-François Richet (“Assault on the 13th Precinct”).

The film stars Gerard Butler (“300,” “Olympus Has Fallen,” “Den of Thieves”) as professional pilot Brodie Torrance, who saves his passengers from lightning by making a risky landing on a war-torn island. The landing is just the beginning.

When passengers are taken hostage by harmful rebels, the only user Torrance can count on for help is Louis Gaspare (Luke Cage’s Mike Colter), an accused assassin who was being transported through the FBI. Now, Torrance and Gaspare will have to be informed so that they accept each other and work together to save the passengers and survive.

In addition to Butler and Colter, the film also stars Yoson An, Daniella Pineda, Kelly Gale, Paul Ben-Victor and Tony Goldwyn.

Moviefone: For starters, what would you say to those who are about to see this movie to prepare them for the theatrical delight they’re about to get?

Mike Colter: Look, “Plane” is a movie for everybody. Everyone will enjoy this movie because it ticks all the boxes. It’s a thriller, it’s gripping and it’s action. It’s a character-driven plot that you can’t escape because we’re fundamentally connected and we’re on opposite sides of the spectrum. What other people will react to are things they’ve been through in their lives, but that’s the way it is. It’s an exciting adventure and you only have to watch it from start to finish, and it’s going to be fast-paced, so enjoy it.

Gerard Butler: I feel like we were given survival, drama and suspense. There’s a lot going on. You’re dealing with characters that are superheroes, they’re characters that you can root for. They are the underdogs.

One, we have what I think is one of the most thrilling action sequences on the plane as we go through this storm, that we are not letting anybody off the hook. You’re in it till the end and it’s terrifying. It’s just white knuckle, and then that’s the start of the movie. Once we land, we’re in a whole new world of Hell. But it’s such a fascinating dynamic between the passengers, how do you control them?

Second, as a captain, he is square, with a big heart, but I have to necessarily depend on an accused murderer, who I know is much bigger than me in this environment. This leads to a really, I think, memorable relationship in an action movie between those two guys.

MF: Gerard, Brodie Torrance is an ordinary guy thrown into an extraordinary circumstance. Can you talk about that and the challenges of playing a character like that?

GB: For me, it was a chance to play a character that, in many ways, is more like me as a person. He is a man. This morning when he wakes up, he’s a pretty unhappy guy. He has lost his wife and is looking to reunite with his daughter. He thinks he’ll get on a plane on New Year’s Eve and save valuable time because things have changed. He didn’t do so well in his career. He is flying for a low-cost airline on the other side of the world. A few hours later, he realizes that he is in a position where those next few hours will describe his entire life, and he didn’t even know what he was going to take from him.

How far does the sense of duty you owe to your passengers or to the people around you take you? He’s obviously taking that to the extreme, but like I said, there’s no perfection in those characters. Am I going to have them all killed? Most of the time, I’m excited and this guy here says, “yes, that’s great, but there are other tactics to do it. “That’s another desirable thing about our dynamics.

MF: Finally, Mike, Louis Gaspare turns out to be qualified for the scenario he’s in. Can you tell us about that and the partnership you have with Brodie?

MC: It’s actually attractive because we never exactly provide all of their skills, or anything like that. But he’s attractive because in the context of the two characters, Brodie is more enthusiastic, like Gerard said. I’m pushing him back. He has all the focus and determination. I’m comparing things, doing research to figure out how and how to make sure we don’t overdo it and stay alive. We try to live to fight another day.

So, I think his character inspires mine to do things that he wouldn’t do for other people because he’s never forced to do it. In this situation, he is an accused murderer. On the contrary, it is a matter of self-preservation. But I think he just sees the hobby and the humanity in Brodie. It rubs off on him and creates this bond between the two of you. Somehow, you see them just a little bit attached at the hip and that’s a wonderful thing to see.
