The hype is already real, especially after the release of the first trailer for Gladiator 2, which featured epic war sequences and costumes reminiscent of the original Oscar-winning film. Now, Ridley Scott is giving enthusiasts even more to look forward to when it comes to his new movie, and I can’t wait.
In a recent interview with Empire, Scott talked about making the sequel more than 20 years after Gladiator’s release and what he hoped to accomplish with the next feature film. He kept many of the film’s main points pretty close to the chest, but teased an action series that he believes supersedes anything he’s ever done before. The filmmaker said:
We start the movie with the biggest action series I’ve ever done. Probably bigger than any other in Napoleon.
While he hasn’t divulged any tidbits about what that scene entails, what we do know about Gladiator 2 is that the film will be a return to the Colosseum, featuring battles between Mescal and Pascal in fights to the death with animals galore. The film takes place two decades after the events of the first Gladiator and features a slave driven to the arena after being encouraged by the legend of Maximus. The scale is already immense and the first photographs of Mescal fighting a rhino have sparked much discussion online. Opening with a large-scale action series is a huge step forward and an exciting way to immediately engage the audience.
Scott says that the opening of Gladiator 2 is the biggest action series he’s ever directed is a pretty blunt statement. The Gladiator action series are some of the grandest and most coordinated scenes ever presented to the camera, and the Battle of Austerlitz scene in Napoleon is also undeniably a cinematic achievement. Even the Blade Runner, Kingdom of Heaven, and Robin Hood series are strong contenders for maximum Ridley Scott epic series. However, if the filmmaker himself thinks that Gladiator 2 takes the cake, I trust his word. alone may be enough to motivate moviegoers to watch the upcoming film of 2024.
We haven’t looked at the movie yet, but according to Scott, it’s the technological advancements that make this new Gladiator more epic than the last.
