All the wonderful things have to end, and Awards Circuit (AC) is actually one of the most wonderful. I had the opportunity to write for AC for two years, from 2008 to 2010, and at that time, I was reading right at Duke. The film industry has fascinated me since I was a kid. Before my father was locked up, he would take me and my brother to New York to watch movies. That’s when I discovered my love of film. I left my hobby on hold to pursue a career in law. But during my law studies, I was deeply depressed. And I went to the movies to cure my sadness. I’d been following AC in college for years. So when I found out AC was looking for new publishers, I emailed Clayton to ask if I could write for the site on a whim. Within minutes, he hit me and said, “Of course.” We talked on the phone for a while and I can say that his fondness for cinema was unprecedented. And as a black person, it was inspiring to see a POC in a leadership position.

As an editor, I’ve covered a lot of movies. With Joey Magidson, I had the chance to see a screening of Funny People in NYC, a stand-up film directed by Judd Apatow (who at the screening). We saw the movie together, and then Joey and I had a deep discussion about the film and the comedy. It was one of the most productive moments I’ve had as a screenwriter and, in fact, it sparked my interest in adapting a comic book and a screenwriter.

Another highlight of my delight as an editor was being the only staff user who, as it should be, expects In The Loop to get a more productive original script nomination. Because of this we are waiting for me, Clayton assigned me an interview to the editor and director of In The Loop, Armando Iannucci. At the time, I thought I’d drop out of law school, pursue a career in entertainment, and become a comedian. After my call with Armando, he gave me a profound recommendation on the importance of art, and I knew for sure that I had to replace careers. So I gave up.

Therefore, I am grateful for my time as editor. Besides, I’m grateful to Clayton for allowing me to write about movies. That laid the foundation for my writing career. His vision, hobby and leadership have taken AC to wonderful heights. And now it’s time for him to do the same on his next vacation as a Variety-worthy editor. A lot of love for Clayton and all the staff editors who have strived to make Awards Circuit one of the most important websites to crown the Oscars. It was an amazing trick.
