NEW YORK (AP) — Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been transferred from a New York prison to a hospital for treatment of a variety of physical conditions, in addition to COVID-19 and pneumonia in both lungs, his representatives said Thursday.
Weinstein, who is awaiting trial in New York on charges of rape and sexual assault, was moved from the Rikers Island crime complex to a locked room at Bellevue Hospital. Other conditions for which he needed treatment included diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis and fluid in his core and lungs, according to a statement released by Weinstein’s publicist that attributed the physical condition data to Craig Rothfeld, Weinstein’s criminal counselor. .
“We continue to express our appreciation to the officials, doctors and nurses” of the city’s public prison and hospital systems “who ensured that Mr. Weinstein was transferred to the Bellevue Hospital Correctional Unit,” said publicist Juda Engelmayer.
Weinstein already had at least one in Bellevue, after first being brought to New York for a legal proceeding similar to his rape case.
Weinstein, 72, was convicted in 2020 of rape and sexual assault. The conviction was overturned by appeals judges, who said jurors had not heard testimony from women who had accused the film producer of misconduct but whose allegations were not part of the case.
A new trial is scheduled for November.
Although his conviction was overturned, Weinstein remained in jail because he was sentenced to 16 years in criminal prison in California after being convicted in a rape case in Los Angeles in 2022.
Weinstein has denied raping or sexually assaulting anyone.
At a recent court hearing, Weinstein’s lawyers said he was in poor physical condition and asked that he be transferred from the prison to a hospital.
