A leading company focused on virtual transformation.
WarnerMedia’s HBO Max launched in May with 10,000 hours of content, but not everyone can access it two months after its debut.
Max has yet to reach a deal with Roku and Amazon, the two largest streaming distribution platforms. They accounted for 70% of the combined market share as of July 2019, according to the market research firm Parks Associates.
The deadlock means that millions of Roku or Amazon Fire TV users can only access content on HBO (currently through the HBO Now or HBO Go apps) than the large number of videos and more TV screens that are available on HBO Max.
Reelgood, the streaming search engine, has exclusive knowledge for Business Insider that shows how many videos and TV screens are missing Roku and Amazon consumers.
As of July 22, HBO Max had 1,838 videos and 442 television screens, while HBO had 1,084 videos and 256 television screens, according to Reelgood. This means that Max has 754 more videos and 186 more TV screens than HBO (940 in total), which are not available to Roku and Amazon users.
Some of the highlights that are on Max still on HBO come with adult Swim’s “Lord of the Rings” and “Rick and Morty” trilogy. The hit comedy “Friends” is also about Max alone. WarnerMedia won Netflix’s streaming rights last year for $425 million ($85 million a year for five years), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Why has an agreement been reached?
Variety reported that a point of contentious is that Max and NBCUniversal’s new streaming platform, Peacock, which also has no agreement with Roku or Amazon, needs users to access the facilities directly through applications that through the Roku channel and Amazon channels, so that corporations can bring together users. Data.
Last week, AT-T said Max and HBO had a total of 36.3 million subscribers in the U.S. As of June 30. The company stated that approximately 3 million new subscribers registered directly with Max and that there were 4.1 million total Maximum Application activations. This means that just over a million consumers who were already paying for HBO a cable or live TV provider have accessed Max. That’s a small number given that Max is loose with his HBO subscription and has all HBO over many other videos and TV shows.
This suggests that the lack of Roku and Amazon Fire TV, or the lack of recognition of the HBO Max logo, makes adoption difficult.
