Well, Netflix seems more than eager to put out new seasons of two of its biggest spy/thriller series, and we have entered an odd situation where both The Night Agent and The Recruit are being released this month just a single week apart.
In a cool move, whether it’s going back to the current season of popular shows, Netflix is rarely doing the “split the season into part a month” thing like they’ve done in recent years. All ten episodes of The Night Agent and six episodes of The Recruit will air on those premiere dates. Netflix has also done this recently with The Squid Game and some other wonderful series, and I think they may eliminate this practice. I guess they’ve noticed too many drops between the two months, and they actually need other people to finish those programs. The concept that other people would be forced to subscribe for two months instead of one doesn’t seem worth it, I guess.
The higher profile of the two series would be The Night Agent. It has become the seventh most watched series in Netflix history with 98. 2 million views, only season 3 of Bridgerton. Review scores from either screen create an attractive division. The Night Agent has roughly the same 74% critic score and 78% audience score. Meanwhile, The Recruit has a critics score of 68% and a top audience score of 84%. But average it out and yes, either one has a similar reception, even though The Night Agent was much more watched.
I find it amusing that those two shows are airing just a week apart, given how similar they are in the subject matter. But Netflix probably understands that it doesn’t want any more official delays. Season 1 of The Recruit aired in December 2022. Season 1 of The Night Agent aired in March 2023. So, either display is pretty close to the two-year mark and enthusiasts are tired of waiting for them.
Unless there’s some sort of disastrous turn, it seems likely that both of these shows may go on to get a season 3, especially The Night Agent with the kind of numbers that season 1 put up. I would call these relative “sleeper hits” in that they do not get all the headlines or set any huge records, but they are powerhouses to some extent in Netflix’s roster of perfectly “watchable” series. Both of these are back very shortly now, stay tuned for reviews.
