Horror, crisis and sport: Exclusive knowledge reveals the films audiences saw about the pandemic

A leading company focused on virtual transformation.

With theaters closed since March and the releases of delayed primary films, audiences have had to rely more on on-demand video and streaming platforms.

The movies online app detected a change in the user’s habit that is evident in the knowledge that followed from March to May of this year, following the advent of coronavirus protection guidelines.

Movies Anywhere provided business insider with exclusive insights that provide a snapshot of the types of videos other people were watching while staying internal and socially remote.

It also announced a new feature called Watch Together on Tuesday, which gives users joint viewing on mobile platforms, the Internet, and top-intelligence TELEVISION platforms. Those who participate in the Screen Pass beta edition must send an eligible Screen Pass movie to others who have not purchased it for joint viewing, at no additional cost.

Total virtual purchases of Movies Anywhere for April and May increased by 65% compared to last year, the company said, but the accumulation of express genres is even more remarkable.

“We’re seeing the biggest peaks around the family sports and entertainment circle, as well as escape videos like horror and suspense,” said Karin Gilford, executive director of Movies Anywhere.

Movies Anywhere stated that films from the family circle remained the main genre of the service, but that other genres experienced significant peaks.

“Contagio”, a 2011 film about a fatal pandemic, gained popularity in the early months of the coronavirus pandemic, which was also transparent to Movies Anywhere. It was the most productive film for the mystery and crisis genres, which rose 149% and 143%, respectively, from year to year in May.

Sports films saw a dramatic 339% increase in sales in May compared to last year, suggesting that audiences hungry for this content while genuine sports took a break.
