Audiences reacted most favorably to Moana 2, giving the film a “fresh” score of 86% on the RT Popcorn meter out of 10,000 ratings from verified users.
Natalia Winkelman is among the leading RT critics who gave Moana 2 a “new” review, writing in her New York Times review: “On screen, the main points of this fabricated composite mythology get a little murky. But squint eyes to see the main points and The Odyssey tends to create a temperament that fluctuates on a scale from benign to brilliant.
Katie Walsh also gave Moana 2 a “fresh” rating, writing for the Tribune News Service, “A worthy sequel, with gorgeous animation, a thoughtful representation of Polynesian culture and another exciting adventure for our inspiring Moana. Does it go beyond the first film? No, but that would have been a tall order.”
Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter is one of the detractors of Moana 2. Gyarkye writes in his THR review, “While Moana focused on the dates between the titular adventurer and his reluctant demigod, Moana 2 divides its attention between more characters. These personalities are windows to dress up for a short film. “
Tim Grierson from Screen International also gave Moana 2 a “lousy” criticism in RT, writing: “What once appeared so captivating about this young explorer that she is working her own path has become, at this time, more complicated And suffocating: it is an adventure that, frustratingly, does not lead anywhere.
Rated PG, Moana 2 is still in theaters.
