As an independent artist in the e-book canopy, Baker works directly with publisher administrators and publishers. His artistic procedure begins when they give him a general concept of what they are for, then gives him examples of sketches, and they come and go with their concepts “until they get an intelligent composition”. Baker works from a reference and description of the character, and passages from the e-book “to get a concept of power and mood.”
The procedure takes several months to complete. “Because this is the first thing other people will see when they take the book, it’s so vital that the canopy is as productive as possible,” Baker said. “For this reason, you have to stand in front of so many other people to make sure you have that hit and that it relates to the genuine story.”
Commenting on his technique for illustrating the canopy of a book, Baker noted: “I am very encouraged by the movement and graphic taste of comics and the drama of Baroque art. It doesn’t respond to trends in ceiling design.” I like to give canopy my non-public touch, but I need to make sure that the taste, colors and environment reflect the characters and the story. I need both one and the canopies I draw to be as exclusive as the story I help bring to life. “
Baker said he laughed with all the covers he had illustrated. Among his favorites is the nonfiction name Making Our Way Home: The Great Migration and the Black American Dream through Blair Imani (Ten Speed Press), for which Baker used a photo of the circle of relatives provided through the author, and also attracted Imani and his companion.
Another favorite is Shirley Chisholm Is a Verb through Veronica Chambers (Dial Books), who will be released tomorrow, an illustrated biography in an e-book with images of the deputy and presidential candidate. Since Baker also illustrated the eBook interiors, he said running in the canopy is simple because he can keep “the same power for everything.” It already had colors and taste for e-book, so it’s about creating a colorful and eye-catching canopy that matches. It’s also my first e-book awning for young readers, so I can laugh and take the change less seriously.
Baker also stated that he had recently “delighted to run over the marquees of Yamile Saied Mendez’s “Algonquin Young Readers) young adult novels and Maika and Maritza Moulite’s One Of The Good Ones (Inkyard Press).” “Yamile sent a reference photo of his niece to the main character, Camila, and I think it was wonderful because I like to use my own nieces as a character reference in my own work,” she says. The canopy representation of Baker’s dream ebook would be a novel because she “loves stories with magic.”
Baker presented a recommendation to those who need to enter the book cover performance. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with other colors and draw your favorite characters in books, videos and shows,” he said. “Start thinking about your favorite blankets and why they had an impact. Research the covers you like and the types of stories and books you’d like to draw for. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of references either. I have a massive record of hands, faces, poses, clothes, flowers and landscapes. You can never have too many references in my opinion.
