If you’re making plans to watch the Fast and Furious videos before Fast X hits theaters in May, it’s a smart concept to make sure you watch them in the most productive order.
You might think a successful car franchise would be undeniable enough, but since it began in 2001 with the raucous and relentless mystery of gangsters and street racing The Fast and Furious, the franchise has only grown in size, ambition and excess, and the confusing narrative that the 12 films have woven together can be hard to follow.
With the two-part end of the Fast saga concluding the story of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his team, the stakes are high.
So before Fast X, which will make Toretto’s circle of family even more diversified, with Hollywood icon Rita Moreno joining the cast as Dom’s grandmother, read on to learn everything you want to know about how to watch the franchise in order.
While the quick videos are maxed out to each other, there’s one notable exception: you guessed it, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
Although this is the third Fast film to be released in theaters, Tokyo Drift is among Fast.
Here are the ones in chronological order:
Tokyo Drift also marks the first appearance of fan favorite Han Lue, who (SPOILER ALERT) gave the impression of being killed in a chase near the end of the film.
Luckily, Universal said Han was so popular that it would be resurrected with a clever fix: all the next quick videos would take position before Toyko Drift.
This meant that Han could return alive and well in Fast.
To further complicate matters, the Fast and Furious franchise also offers several prequels, sequels, and midcuels at top speed. Most of those shorts were created for DVD releases of the original films, losing light in unknown spaces of the saga timeline at full speed.
First released on the DVD of 2 Fast 2 Furious (the next film on this list), the short film Turbo-Charged Prelude accurately shows how Brian (Paul Walker) went from being an LAPD cop to a criminal. Expected: After helping Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) evade law enforcement, Brian himself becomes a wanted man.
Los Bandoleros, the upcoming short film, focuses on Dom and was shown to enthusiasts via an additional DVD. (Don Omar) and Tego (Tego Calderón) to the audience. Including all those mini-movies, the Fast and Furious timeline looks like this:
If you’re new to Fast and Furious, sticking to simple top steering would arguably be best. After all, most films follow a chronological order, with only the third installment in the franchise, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), causing confusing piles in the timeline, as stated.

The first episode of the series, The Fast and the Furious (2001), follows undercover cop Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), who joins a heist team led by Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel).

2 Fast 2 Furious does not feature Vin Diesel, but it does feature Walker and follows the events of The Fast and the Furious. It features Ludacris as Tej and Tyrese Gibson as Roman, who have two main characters.

Cast: Lucas Black, Bow Wow, Nathalie Kelley, Sung Kang, Brian Tee.
This is where things take a turn. This was intended as a kind of “reboot” for the entire franchise. There was no Paul Walker or Diesel (apart from a minor cameo). . . or Ludacris, Michelle Rodriguez or Gibson. Basically, there is no major character here. The film is set in Japan and stars Han (Sung Kang). Fortunately, enthusiasts turned to Han, but the movie follows the timeline a bit.

In order not to be with the first film in the franchise (these titles are confusing!), this one ranks fourth. After 2 Fast 2 Furious, we forget about The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift for now.

Starring: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Sung Kang, Tego Calderon, Don Omar, Gal Gadot, with Dwayne Johnson and Matt Schulze.
The Rock first appears in Fast Five as Luke Hobbs, and we finally see Ludacris and Tyrese return to the franchise. Sung Kang also appears as Han, and Gal Gadot also appears. Ridicule here.

We have a new villain introduced, or a whole circle of villain relatives with Luke Evans as Owen Shaw. We also have a post-credits scene to introduce Jason Statham’s character, Deckard Shaw, who appears to kill Han in a scene first seen in Tokyo Drift. Now that we’ve excelled, ugh!

The team gathers for this one who sees us say goodbye to Paul Walker. Statham returns after this credits scene for his first lead role in the FF franchise that saw him clash with Diesel and The Rock.

We continue the franchise with this eighth film. We greet Charlize Theron here as the evil Cipher. This marks Paul Walker’s first episode, Brian, and also introduces us to a new member of Dom’s clan.

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby, Cliff Curtis and Helen Mirren.
A small detour here, because this is not the main franchise, but a spin-off. The Rock and Statham once again form a team opposite to Idris Elba’s super soldier. Shaw is going from villain to hero. Vanessa Kirby also plays the role of Statham’s sister Hattie, while Helen Mirren reprises her role as a mother after appearing in the eighth film Fast and Furious.

In the final episode of The Fast Saga, Dominic and Letty see their retirement interrupted by the appearance of a new and damaging threat: Dom’s younger brother, Jakob Toretto, played by John Cena.
Dwayne Johnson is absent from this film, but we have the return of Charlize Theron as Cipher and Helen Mirren as Queenie Shaw.

The film will see Jason Statham return to the main franchise as Deckard Shaw, while introducing new stars to the series in the form of Jason Momoa as the villain and Oscar winners Brie Larson and Rita Moreno.
Charlize Theron will also return as recurring antagonist and hacker Cipher.
We would be surprised if it ended with a suspense before the eleventh film.
Fast X will be in theaters on May 19, 2023.
Until recently, most of the Fast and Furious franchise could only be watched on the streaming service NOW with a cinema pass (£11. 99 per month), however most films have already left the platform, with Furious 7 (2015) remaining.
You should not have franchises on Netflix.
As for the first 6 videos and the Fate of the Furious, all of them are available for free streaming on Prime Video for subscribers, but you can rent or buy F9 and Hobbs.
The director’s cut of Fast and Furious Nine is also on the service.
