If you had to choose one superhero to be the face of Marvel Comics, which one would you choose?Most people would probably say Spider-Man, and for good reason. Peter Parker is one of the most famous comic book characters ever created.
He’s just a kid looking to balance his studies and appointments with the daunting task of protecting his beloved city from the sociopaths who throw pumpkin bombs everywhere. Oh, and that doesn’t even speak to his actual paintings as a photographer for the Daily Bugle. Bottom line: People love Spider-Man, whether in his universe or ours, so it’s no surprise that the web-slingering character has reached a middling level in about 10 live-action videos over the past two decades.
If you’re new to the franchise or just need to watch it again, here’s how to watch all the Spider-Man live-action videos in order.
Since all three iterations take place in different pockets of the multiverse, they can be watched in any order.
Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire), a standout student of Nebbishy’s, becomes a web-casting superhero after receiving superhuman talents through the bite of a radioactive arachnid. Considered even better than its predecessor, Spider-Man 2 pits Peter Parker against one of his greatest classic adversaries: Otto Octavius, aka Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina). A poignant mirror image of duty and what it means to be a hero, this sequel remains one of the most important superhero videos ever made. The sequel grossed $788 million internationally and owns 93% of Rotten Tomatoes.
The same can’t be said for Raimi’s trilogy, which stumbled looking to do too much. The story of Spider-Man 3 is too full of villains: Harry Osborn/New Goblin (James Franco), Flint Marko/Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), and Eddie Brock/Venom (Topher Grace). But hey, at least we got some memorable kicks from Maguire dancing like an idiot. Although it wasn’t as well received by critics as the last two releases (it has 63% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film still managed to win the highest box office of the trilogy, with $894 million worldwide.
The Andrew Garfield-directed reboot and directed by 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb (a very appropriate surname) was really fun, but it seemed too superfluous just five years after Spider-Man 3. The story is more or less the same. Mary Jane Watson is replaced by Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). This time, a newly motorized Peter Parker faces off against Dr. Curt Connors, aka The Lizard (Rhys Ifans). The Amazing Spider-Man duology differs from Raimi’s films. adding the general mystery of what happened to Peter’s missing parents. The redesign was a monetary fortune with $757 million international and commissions of 71% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Like Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell into the trap of wanting to do too much at once. The story is omnipresent, featuring Electro (Jamie Foxx) as the main villain before throwing Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) into the scene. the combine at the last minute. Hell, there’s even a sneak peek of Rhino (Paul Giamatti). The purpose is obviously to lay the groundwork for a Sinister Six team that we’ll never get to see. The sequel was a monetary success, grossing $708 million worldwide. , though critics weren’t too impressed, leading to a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Following in the footsteps of the long-awaited Spider-Man MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, the first entry into the Jon Watts-directed trilogy discovers Peter Parker (Tom Holland) at his best. Well, maybe Spider-Man 3 Peter a little more arrogant, but that’s beside the point. Certain that he will be invited to be part of the Avengers at any moment, young Parker begins to evade his education and his daily social jobs to continue his life as a crime fighter. He ends up doing more damage than smart when he clashes with Vulture (a wonderfully sinister Michael Keaton) and loses the respect of his mentor, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr. ). Homecoming has amassed $880 million worldwide and lately owns 92% of Rotten Tomatoes.
Still reeling from the death Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, Peter goes on a European trip with his high school classmates. Along the way, he crosses paths with Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), who claims to be a displaced hero from another reality. In reality, Beck is a tech genius looking to get even with Stark Industries. His dastardly plan is foiled, but Mysterio still gets the last laugh when he reveals Peter’s Spider-Man secret to the world via gossip hound J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons reprising his role from the Raimi films). As a bookend to the MCU’s Infinity Saga, Far From Home made over $1 billion worldwide and holds a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
With his secret identity now public knowledge, Peter seeks the help of his Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who casts a spell to repair the damage. Things go horribly wrong, fracturing the multiverse and bringing in several villains from other realities: Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Lizard (Rhys Ienthusiasts), and Electro (Jamie Foxx). . ) – in the MCU. What made fans go wild was the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for an epic team between three generations of Spider-Men. As part of Sony’s efforts to launch its own comic book cinematic universe outside of the MCU (the stinky taste of “Morbin’ Time” has only just begun to fade), S. J. Mrs. Web, directed by Clarkson, stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic with clairvoyant abilities, who finds herself drawn into an exciting adventure with other Spider-People. If you read comedians, you know that Cassandra is destined to lose her sight. and the father of Web of Life and Fate (a way for Sony to gain access to the multiverse and, perhaps, introduce the fearsome heirs).
Can the villains and antiheroes of Spider-Man’s extensive rogues’ gallery sustain a blockbuster franchise? Sony sure hopes so! J. C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) directed this R-rated interpretation of Spidey’s trophy-collecting foe, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train) as the titular hunter. Originally meant to be released in fall 2023, Kraven the Hunter was delayed to summer 2024 as a direct result of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But no matter — at least we’ll finally get to see a comics accurate version of Rhino on the big screen!
Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote the first two movies of the trilogy, steps into the director’s chair for the next chapter in the saga of investigative reporter Eddie Brock and his brain-eating alien parasite (both are played by a go-for-broke Tom Hardy). And just to be clear, Venom doesn’t eat Eddie’s brain — he prefers to consume the grey matter of others. No plot details are available at this time, but filming did resume last month following the resolution of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
At the time of writing, it’s still unclear when (and if) Tom Holland will step back into the shoes of Peter Parker for Spider-Man’s exit within the confines of the MCU. That said, the narrative list is still clear, given that Doctor Strange has erased Peter’s identity from all of reality.
“All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character,” Holland said during a recent press conference (via Collider). “Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing. I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”
