If you’ve made it this far without revealing some of the main things that happen in the new Marvel Studios logo movie, Deadpool and Wolverine, stop reading this article now. Let’s talk in depth about the third Deadpool movie. I’ve been warned!
To paraphrase the wonderful Ferris Bueller, if you can catch a new Marvel Studios movie in Hall H on opening weekend, I highly recommend it. It’s a great choice. Certainly, this cannot happen often. This may never happen again. That’s why I knew I had to be in the mythical Hall H of San Diego Comic-Con for a panel titled “Deadpool and Wolverine: A Celebration of Life. “Being able to see this movie with the total capacity of 7,000 MCU enthusiasts would surely be special.
And they disappointed.
After the screening, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told the audience:
If there are still doubts about the importance of experiencing something in a crowd, this has replaced everything. It was the most productive cinematic experience of my life. THANK YOU!
Even if I allow for some hyperbole in Kevin Feige’s statement, the experience of seeing Deadpool and Wolverine among that crowd was truly electric. I had the opportunity to see the film at the world premiere in New York, so I was expecting certain beats, knowing that they would fire up the crowd. These were the six moments from Marvel Studios’ newest movie that elicited the loudest roars from the Hall H crowd, the moments that made me realize I would never enjoy watching this comedy with this audience.
The full opening credits series is fun, with Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) digging up Logan’s adamantium bones and then employing them to BRUTALLY dispose of an army of TVA agents, all choreographed to the infectious “Bye Bye Bye” via *NSYNC. But Wade Wilson dressed in Wolverine’s claws, and opening them as the name of the film seems to him, was surely the initial moment that made the crowd rise from their seats and stand up.
The number one major spoiler cameo occurs when Wolverine and Logan are sent to The Void (from Disney’s Loki series). They have interaction in their first fight, which led to a lot of teasing in the trailer. But then they face a character that Deadpool mistakes for Captain America. He apologizes to the noble Marvel hero for the foul language and slight “ass play” he might find in this R-rated MCU movie. Only Evans is NOT betting on Steve Rogers, because the next biggest roar will come when. . .
So it’s NOT the Avenger crashed in the void. As we realize, the characters Deadpool and Wolverine encounter in this desert are usually leftovers from the Fox era of Marvel storytelling. We meet Sabretooth (Tyler Mane), Pyro (Aaron Stanford) and other characters who have come to fruition this time. That’s why Evans was returning to the first Marvel hero he played on screen: Johnny Storm, also known as The Human Torch, in the first Fantastic Four films. It was an incredible moment and a wonderful preview of the fact that Marvel will bring the Fantastic Four to the MCU in their official main film in 2025.
Once Deadpool and Wolverine escape the clutches of Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), they embark on an adventure through The Void to track down the Others, an organization of heroes who seek out and avoid Nova’s wrath. And it is here that they meet 4 other heroes from Fox’s past era. One of them was spoiled in the trailers: Dafne Keen returns as her Logan character, X-23. The others were a pleasant surprise, and enthusiasts went crazy for Wesley Snipes, returning as Blade, the walker of the day. We all know the upheavals Marvel had when getting a new Blade off the ground, this time with Mahershala Ali in the lead role. So I wonder what it meant when Snipes said to the camera, “They were only on Blade, and there will only be one Blade. With Reynolds hunting the camera after that with a knowing smile. . .
It was the moment that provoked the loudest roar from the crowd in Hall H. And this is the moment I knew was coming and I was waiting for the roar. As Deadpool and Wolverine prepare to wipe out a hundred variants of Deadpool, Hugh Jackman is nonetheless doing the one thing Marvel enthusiasts have been waiting for him to do for decades: he’s dressed in a comic book Wolverine mask. And it looks beautiful. Is it worth the wait? Yes, it’s worth the wait.
The latter, I must believe, is CGI. This is the moment when Wolverine grabs Deadpool’s hand and then shows his claws to close the loop between matter and antimatter, thus putting an end to Cassandra Nova. But the sheer force of the force decimates Jackman’s clothes, revealing his incredibly sculpted abs. Deadpool takes the time to live Jackman’s physique in duration, and while I don’t doubt the man’s commitment to the role, he’s 55. . . and 23 of them appeared. Of course. But maybe he got a little help from the visual effects department.
The overall experience of Deadpool and Wolverine is littered with victories like this. But those are the ones that stood out in Hall H. Don’t miss seeing Deadpool and Wolverine in the movies. It’s that kind of cinematic journey!
