I’m completely expecting Deadpool 3 to take pictures of the MCU’s recent mistakes, but I’m still surprised that Kevin Feige talks about a franchise that doesn’t work.

Marvel Cinematic Universe is at the moment a well-oiled machine, constantly expanding in theaters and streaming with a Disney subscription. But enthusiasts who have spent years watching Marvel videos know that there have been some flops in recent years. I fully hope that Deadpool 3 will address the recent mistakes of the MCU. But I’m still amazed that Kevin Feige is openly talking about a franchise that doesn’t work.

What we know about Deadpool and Wolverine is limited, but enthusiasts expect Ryan Reynolds to cast a lot of shadow over the MCU. Marvel Studios doesn’t live off its failures, however, Kevin Feige recently spoke to Inverse and probably made it clear that the Eternals franchise is dead. In his words:

There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2. There is, and I think you may have noticed in a trailer we recently released, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Some giant things have risen from the ocean.

Honestly, I’m shocked. Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios are known for keeping their cards close to the chest. In addition to keeping the film’s secrets, that also means not publicly acknowledging when things didn’t work out. But it turns out that Feige has no interest in continuing the story with Eternals. And given the cliffhangers that accompanied the end of Eternals, it turns out that we may never get to the resolution of what happened to the titular team.

Upon release, Eternals did poorly critically, and fans were dissatisfied with its runtime, pacing, and massive cast of newcomers. For some, this represented a negative update in a post-Endgame MCU, and is the first in a series of disappointments. Still, hearing Kevin Feige rule out the option of a sequel is crazy, especially with the setup for his ending and Eternals’ credits scenes.

Of course, it is important to note that Chloé Zhao’s blockbuster is rarely the only Marvel sadness that has occurred in the later stages. Marvel’s box office was so bad that Marvel stopped publishing its numbers. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania also exploded at the box office, marking one of the first times this has happened. But Feige didn’t explicitly rule out the option of more sequels or the return of those titular heroes. And that’s part of what makes his comments about Eternals so crazy.

Kevin Feige’s comments refer to the trailer for Captain America: Brave New World, as this film will finally reference Tiamut’s frozen body, which was seen leaving Earth at the end of Eternals. The film also features Kit Harington as the Dark One. Sadly, it’s unclear if those narrative threads will be pulled offline, adding some of the Eternals gear brought into the area via Arishem. In addition, there is the role of Eros through Harry Styles.
