The demolition of what was once one of South Bristol’s most popular buildings is imminent, with machinery to demolish it now in place.

The former 1930s art deco cinema on Filwood Broadway in Knowle West has been demolished since 2019, but no plan was allowed for what will be built in its position until earlier this year.

Since then, contractors have been running to transparent the building’s internal fixtures, which a bingo runner for fifteen years has been empty and deserted for 29 years.

Cranes and machinery were brought to downtown Filwood Broadway today (Thursday, March 30), with demolition beginning Friday or early next week.

There was a belated crusade to save construction, led by a resident, Nick Haskins, who entered construction when contractors moved in and vowed to crouch there.

But when plans to upgrade construction of the movie theater and surrounding site were presented to the City Council’s plan-making committee in January, local citizens were told they were too far behind: The council authorized the demolition of the building in 2019, and all that was left was what will update it.

It will be a crescent of 17 apartments and thirteen houses, with an advertising area on the ground floor for advertising or network use. There will be several three- and four-story buildings overlooking Filwood Broadway.

Around the same time the building permit was granted, Filwood Broadway earned £14. 5 million in cash for government improvements.
