In unexpected news, a new Macross anime will be produced through the Gundam Sunrise studio.
Revealed on the official Macross website, he also tweeted accordingly (pictured below). In short, it is genuine and not a sham in any way.
Why this is unusual, it would have been like George Lucas asking Gene Roddenberry to direct a Star Wars movie.
In fact, Macross has been thought to be Gundam’s mecha. In the wake of Gundam, the original Macross simultaneously took space opera anime in several new directions.
With transforming variable fighters pitted against giant aliens, amidst the backdrop of 80s idol singers, Macross made its mark and has been a mecha anime staple since.
Macross has joined Robotech, along with Southern Cross and MOSPEADA. However, the main Macross narrative has continued in many series and films in the years since, the newest of which is Macross Delta in 2015.
The appeal here is that Sunrise has a long history of spawning other hugely mecha anime, from Dunbine to VOTOMS to Code Geass and even Escaflowne.
So for Sunrise to be running on a new Macross anime is unexpected but wonderful news, as the studio knows its mecha anime.
The other facet is that Sunrise is now owned by Bandai Namco, which runs Bandai Spirits. This last point is important, because like Gundam, Macross offers a lot of lucrative merchandise, from models to toys.
Bandai Spirits has already produced some Macross-style kits and toys over the years, with recent releases being Array, but this news means we have even more to look forward to.
Currently, there’s no word on when this new Macross anime will air, but with Sunrise and consequently Bandai Namco, I’m expecting some very big things for Macross from now on.
